Tuning trends 2020/21 - what is currently really hot?

Last year, at automobile shows and tuning meetings, it was relatively easy to guess what new trends there will be in 2020. This year it is much more difficult due to the Corona crisis and the associated canceled trade fairs and meetings. For example, it looks pretty bad for those who were planning to get some inspiration at Lake Constance this October and admire various exhibits. The possibility is there (expected) not until next year in May because the "Tuning World Bodensee“, Which is an internationally known and popular show, has been relocated and thus shares the fate that many other major events also suffered this year. If you still want to be inspired by a tuning show in a timely manner, you can at least still Food Motor Show 2020 visit which as Limited Edition actually takes place towards the end of November. Apart from that, sources for research and inspiration to further improve your own vehicle are of course the internet and of course your own creativity and the tuner on site.

Trend 2020: wider, deeper and faster

One of the trends this year were extensions. Fender attachments were very popular and so were the manufacturers were able to impress with eye-catching models. One of the highlights in this regard was the “still” virtual one Pandem Toyota GR Yaris, which was presented by the Japanese pandemic rocketbunny tra-kyoto team (headed by Kei Miura) and which not only impresses visually, but also in terms of price: Around 33.000 euros should be due for the basic variant, which would be quite bearable in comparison. At this sight, the "tuner's heart" beats faster and you definitely get a desire for speed - all the more desirable that the kit is actually installed in this way later.

Since the successful film "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift“, Which was shown in German cinemas in 2006, the Japanese scene for racing and tuning has also become a legend for us in Germany - and rightly so: the vehicles that were shown in the film still make it today big enthusiasm. The popularity of Japan is so great that you can also race in virtual video games in Japan's metropolis and thus, to a certain extent, everyone can experience this attraction. In video games like this you can always find spectacular design ideas for vehicles, and especially in games like Grand Theft Auto (Rockstar Games) you can, thanks to the availability of several workshops, customize your vehicle according to your own wishes and ideas and amazingly extensively - provided you have enough money was earned in the game. But the experience in the game can of course not keep up with reality despite - admittedly very good implementation. For example, you miss the feeling of speed and the sound. Nevertheless, the tuning options in the game are a good inspiration and of course the game itself is also entertaining.

Make unusual vehicles even more unusual!

Broad, customized import models are also trendy. And at the moment, youngtimers are still popular and they will probably be shown again at the upcoming Tuning World on Lake Constance. Unfortunately it still takes a while before you can see them, so it is a good idea to bridge the gap by following what the "big players" have presented. For example, there is the already special BMW model M2 CS, which delivers 450 hp and has an adaptive chassis. This vehicle has now been modified even more extensively by the Swiss tuner Dähler and the model of the M2 CS as DCL Dähler Competition Line to be introduced. It includes, among other things, an Eventuri intake system and a complete exhaust system made of stainless steel. The two upgrade levels differ in terms of usage and look like this:

  • Level 1: The series output (450 PS and 550 Newton meters) was increased to 520 PS and 700 Newton meters and the vehicle was homologated for Switzerland and the EU.
  • Level 2: This was followed by a further increase in output to 550 hp and 740 Newton meters. The vehicle is then not approved for German and Swiss roads. The M2 is specially built for export and for the racetrack.

In both variants a carbon intake system is used, which has some technical advantages due to the inverted conical filter, which is covered with carbon fiber and Kevlar. This results in an even airflow, more power, improved response and an extremely exotic sound.

Electric and hybrid vehicles

Electric vehicles can also be tuned, even if many certainly prefer the classic combustion engine. Although this is still quite difficult on your own due to the technical conditions, technologies for increasing performance are, and unfortunately, too illegal sound generators of electric vehicles on the advance. In the case of electric cars, efficiency is also very important, which contradicts classic tuning in some points: for example, wide tires are not used in order to save energy. Attention is also paid to the aerodynamics, such as that of the rims. Electric vehicles are not only convincing because of their supposedly good environmental balance - they are also becoming more and more promising in terms of tuning, which is making them more and more attractive to a broader target group.

Even if there is not much going on at the moment, the upcoming trade fairs will soon give the scene a boost, which is not least due to the constantly developing technical possibilities. This is creating a surge in tuning electric vehicles while more classic trends hold up. Nevertheless, we can look forward to what else awaits us in the future.
