Fleet operators: install turning assistants and save lives!

The introduction of turning assistance systems in Germany has already made a significant contribution to road traffic safety and prevented accidents between trucks turning right and endangered road users. According to studies by insurers, around a third of all fatal road accidents involving cyclists in Germany are caused by trucks turning right. A turning assistance system could prevent more than 60 percent of serious accidents, according to the insurers. However, studies by the ADFC show that less than 5 percent of the trucks registered in Germany are equipped with such systems. Turn assistants have been binding for all newly registered vehicles up to 1 m and up to 2020 tons since July 25,25, 60. Older vehicles must be retrofitted by July 1, 2022.

Brigade Elektronik, the specialist in vehicle safety technology, is now appealing to fleet operators to equip their vehicles with turning assistants as quickly as possible and thus save lives in road traffic. "Complex blind spots in large vehicles and limited visibility in adverse weather conditions contribute significantly to accidents," commented John Osmant, Managing Director of Brigade Elektronik GmbH. “If a truck is equipped with a warning system consisting of a side camera and side sensor, the driver's attention is drawn to any road users in the blind spot on the passenger side. This is particularly important when turning right. ”The turning assistant WUE-AAS-4.0 with ABE from Wüllhorst GmbH & Co. KG has recently been available from Brigade. The WUE AAS-4.0 was developed to distinguish static from dynamic obstacles.

The detection area has been expanded so that the area behind the A-pillar is also recognized. The system works with radar-based person recognition and a camera monitor system (AHD monitor and camera from Brigade) and is activated by the turn signal on the right or a turn. The WUE AAS-4.0 can be used for various vehicle types and, thanks to the pre-assembled components, offers easy assembly. In conclusion, Osmant said: "We appeal to fleet operators not to unnecessarily postpone retrofitting their existing vehicles so that we can all improve road safety together and prevent fatal accidents both in Germany and throughout Europe."
