Today we have a short one Tutorial for you on your own behalf. In our VW Phaeton, the control unit for the electronic tailgate had been defective for a few weeks due to a cable break in the cable harness in the tailgate. This expressed itself so that you could only open the tailgate with a lot of patience. If you pressed the button on the remote control or on the VW emblem on the trunk lid, the trunk opened, closed again and then opened again. However, the tailgate did not open completely, but only the lock was released. The tailgate did not open completely until the next time you press the VW emblem. There was also no complete function when closing because here, after pressing the button in the tailgate, the trunk lid was only lowered but not locked into the lock and locked.

This was only possible manually by gently pressing the tailgate. Since we wanted to save us the costs of the new part and beyond the transition to the VW workshop, we have decided to take over the whole thing on our own.

Before we removed the control unit, we disconnected “both” batteries in the trunk. We started with the so-called comfort battery, which is located on the left behind the cover. After this battery was disconnected, we disconnected the starter battery on the right side and then we could start.
After a quick search on the Internet, we knew that the tailgate control panel was hidden under the fairing in the skies of the trunk. For this you have to loosen a Torx 9 screw and then the cover can be released with a small jerk from its attachment. Of course, you should handle this carefully because at this point there is still more technology. The removal of the control part (is in the middle and of it the left position) is simple in which one solves only the brown tab, the control part ausklippst and replaced by the new control part.
In reverse order then reassemble everything and reconnect the batteries, starting with the starter battery. In this case, the control unit does not have to be specially trained by means of VCDS, and VW also has to be provided with component protection or similar. Not. The replaced control unit works immediately, if this is not the case, you just have to explain to the control unit by means of the following instructions what it has to do.
- Open tailgate halfway
- in this position, press the button on the outside of the tailgate until the lock responds
- Release the button and press it again (tailgate moves to the end position)
- Now you can close the trunk normally
