Tips for buying used cars

Keep your eyes open when buying a used car! What sounds like an old truism must definitely be heeded. Because if you take a close look at the object of desire before buying a used car, you can save yourself some nasty surprises.
Where is the best place to find it?

First of all, the question arises of where to look for a used car at all. Dealers in their own place of residence or advertisements from the regional newspaper are often the first address, but the range is comparatively limited and anyone looking for a certain model or special equipment will find it difficult to find what they are looking for. The Internet, on the other hand, offers opportunities that we could only dream of in the past. On websites like Auto Hero, for example, you can choose from countless vehicle models. Here you can find vehicles from both dealers and private individuals, which makes the range all the more diverse. Anyone who knows exactly what they are looking for in advance is therefore at the best address with online portals.

Dealer purchase: Pay attention to warranty or guarantee

Vehicles offered by dealers are usually more expensive than used cars from private sellers, after all, the dealer makes a living from it. He also gives a two-year guarantee, which he is also legally obliged to do. However, this only covers clear defects, such as engine damage. Later signs of wear, including defective brakes or shock absorbers, must be borne by the buyer. However, dealers often give far-reaching guarantees, especially for young used vehicles. Before buying, you should therefore inquire with the seller about the handling of warranty and guarantee.

This is to be considered when buying a car from home

Private individuals do not have to give a guarantee when selling, the buyer can save a lot. It is therefore all the more meticulous to examine the vehicle before buying it. If the car has a fresh TÜV, a lot has already been won. Used cars with a checkbook are particularly in demand, but those interested in buying should also take a critical look. The first entry must always come from the manufacturer of the car! Have maintenance work been carried out regularly and by whom? Are the mileage understandable? If there is no checkbook, the seller may still have the last repair bills. If necessary, this work must be checked. Do the recently replaced parts really look new or are they really not? Interested parties should also inform themselves about any weaknesses of the model and check them particularly critically before buying.

Recognize Mogelpackungen

You can easily see beautiful kilometers by looking into the interior. A car with 100.000 kilometers should have no worn steering wheel, no worn pedal rubbers, no worn shift bag and no clear cracks in the seat leather.
A trained eye is part of recognizing an accident vehicle. Strikingly large or irregular gaps between the fenders, doors, bonnet, tailgate and bumpers indicate this, as do later repainted parts or strong rust on the metal supports in the engine compartment. The alarm bells should ring when the airbag cover shimmers deep black, even though the rest of the steering wheel is already faded. If the airbag cover also sounds hollow when knocked off, it was heavily inserted into the bag of tricks, the car could be a life-threatening blender!

Without a test drive better no purchase

However, if the car is OK up to this point, a test drive should complete the assessment. Experts first let the previous owner behind the wheel to see how he handled the car. You need to pay attention to directional stability, functioning brakes, an accurate gearshift and a healthy engine running as well as chassis noise, ideally on cobblestones. All functions of the car such as windows, sunroof, heating and air conditioning must be tested. After the journey, check again whether the car is leaking oil or water. The vehicle registration must of course also change hands when paying, otherwise there is no business! It is also best to record all important data in a purchase contract for private purchases, forms for this are available on the Internet or in TÜV stations.

If all these instructions are heeded, nothing stands in the way of buying a used car. In the end, everyone has to decide which path is the right one.
