Volkswagen charging robot - the revolution in the garage?

For the first time, Volkswagen Group Components is giving a glimpse of a prototype of its mobile charging robot. It is one of the visionary concepts that will successfully expand the charging infrastructure over the next few years. Its task: fully autonomous charging of vehicles in limited parking spaces such as underground garages. "A charging infrastructure that is available everywhere is and will remain a key success factor for e-mobility. Our charging robot is just one of several approaches, but certainly one of the most visionary“, Says Thomas Schmall, CEO of Volkswagen Group Components.

Fully autonomous charging

The charging robot - started via app or Car-to-X communication - acts completely autonomously. It drives the vehicle to be charged independently and communicates with it. From opening the loading flap to connecting the plug to decoupling. The entire process takes place without human involvement. In order to be able to charge several vehicles at the same time, the mobile robot brings a trailer to the vehicle as a mobile energy storage device, connects it and thus charges the battery of the electric vehicle. The energy storage remains with the car during the charging process. Meanwhile, the robot takes care of loading more vehicles. When the service is over, he picks up the mobile energy storage system himself and brings it back to the central charging station.

Thomas Schmall, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group Components: “The sustainable development of a high-performance charging infrastructure is a central task that demands the entire industry. We develop solutions that help avoid time-consuming individual measures. The mobile charging robot and our flexible fast charging station are such solutions. ”The company unit is currently working on a complete DC charging family. The flexible fast charging station will be launched on the market in early 2021. The DC wallbox has been in a pilot test at several of the company's German production sites for several weeks. The mobile charging robot has successfully reached prototype status and is now to be intensively developed. One of the prerequisites for market readiness is, among other things, Car-to-X communication, which enables the autonomous charging process.

In keeping with the central importance of the topic, Volkswagen Group Components will in future be responsible, among other things, for all charging activities and charging systems of the Volkswagen Group. The charging robot can thus be integrated into an overall concept that focuses on the sustainable success of e-mobility and thus the electrification of transport. “The construction of the charging infrastructure is a basic requirement. But it has to be cost-effective and needs-based, ”continues Schmall. "We therefore not only focus our developments on the needs of customers and the technical requirements of e-vehicles, but also on the economic possibilities of potential partners." For operators of parking lots, multi-storey car parks and underground garages, for example, anyone can use the mobile charging robot Parking space can be electrified quickly and easily. This not only reduces the structural effort, but also the potential costs at the same time.
