The white-wall vulcanization produces so-called whitewall tires. These are tires that have a white wall (tire sidewall) or a white stripe on one side. Since the tires were made of natural rubber, the first of their kind were not as we know them in black, but they were white. The black paint, as we know it from tires, has been given the tires by additives added to optimize the properties of the tires. Whitewall tires were manufactured by only a few specialized companies. In whitewall manufacturing, certain methods are used. With these particular methods, it is possible to apply special rubber compounds with different properties and colors at a defined location of the tire. These particular characteristics of whitewall tires are recorded in certain standards, the international patent classification B29D 30 / 00 G.

In addition to the direct production of whitewall tires, whitewall tires can also be produced after production by subsequent vulcanization of special rubber compounds. When subsequently vulcanising white wall tires, a white raw rubber is vulcanised onto the previously roughened tire side. The white raw rubber in the vulcanized state is almost identical to the tire rubber. The only difference is the soot content, which is the black maker. Negative effects on the tire due to the temperatures during vulcanization to whitewall tires are not to be expected. The vulcanization to Weißwandreifen is to be compared with a repair of the tire, for example, in a crack by a screw. When vulcanizing the tire, the same temperatures as in the heating repair occur. The process is used to repair the tire and not to inflict damage to the tire. The process of vulcanising has also been tested by tire manufacturers such as Kleber, a subsidiary of Michelin. The test results have shown that no negative impact on the safety, walkability, driving stability and longevity of the tire arises.

Does the future look like this?

The Kraftfahrtbundesamt in Flensburg has granted the white-wall tire vulcanisation process according to ECE regulation 108 the approval for the construction-compliant white-wall tire manufacturing. Independent experts inspect the plants offering white-wall tire vulcanization annually. There are several forms of vulcanization of various dimensions. Common sizes are 8 inches, 10 inches, 12 inches, 13 inches, 14 inches, 15 inches, 16 inches. For 8 and 10 inch tires, a width between 10 and 25 mm is possible. With 12 inch tires, a width between 10 and 40 mm is possible. For 13 to 16 inch tires, a width from 10 to 45 mm is possible. Many vendors also offer white-wall tire vulcanization on request for tires between 17 and 20 inch tires. If you want to bring the ring to advantage, you can between the inner edge and the outer edge of the rim, the rim flange, a distance between 10 to 15 mm attach. As a result, the whitewall on the finished tire is approximately 1,5 mm above the tire sidewall. Some vendors also offer other colors in addition to white-wall vulcanization. As a rule, the color red is offered here.
