Not just on classic cars - white wall rings when tuning

White wall rings (also Felgenzierringe) on the tires are very chic and should definitely match the vehicle type. The rings belong on the tires, especially in vintage cars. But in recent years we have increasingly seen the cheap tuning option on modern vehicles. For assembly, there are two main methods of attaching the whitewall rings to the tires. A very rough distinction can be made here as to whether the vehicle is still driving on the road or whether it is only functioning as an exhibit and is no longer being moved. As a manufacturer, there is the brand Ravus or vendors who use whitewall vulcanization processes to change the color of the tire.

For classic cars that are still on the road, there is an easily mountable whitewall ring tuning. The chic whitewall rings can be attached to the tires without having to deflate the tires or clamping them in between. The assembly takes place without dismantling the wheels. These whitewall rings are also completely UV stable and will not lose color or discolour. These modern whitewall rings are fitted with a specially designed underring that prevents tire wear and tear. The white wall ring is attached with the help of a rim decorative ring. Optionally, the attachment can also be done with a type-matching wheel cap.

This tuning option is completely free of official entries in the vehicle documents. These white wall rings are approved completely without an ABE, because the assembly takes place on a fixed conception. These rings are available in a full white tone or optionally with a black and white design. In this way, the right whitewall ring can be mounted for every car model, which is also completely secure and tight. The whitewall rings can be kept clean with any household cleaner. These rings are not suitable for aluminum rims. The rings are designed entirely for car steel rims.

White wall rings for exhibition vintage cars

Vintage cars that are no longer actively moved and are only used for exhibition can also be tuned with white wall rings. For this purpose, the rings are offered as decorative items, which is why they are not suitable for driving. Before assembly, a thorough check must be carried out to ensure that the rim edge of the wheels is completely intact. All damage must be repaired beforehand, because damage to the edge of the rim can cause the whitewall ring to wear through at the point and a detachment process to occur. For assembly, the wheel is first dismantled. Then the air is let out of the tire and the tire is detached from the rim until the rim well is exposed.

Then the white wall ring is simply placed on the tire. Now the tire is pumped up again. It is pumped until the tire and the ring are firmly connected to the rim bed. If there are any shifts, you can simply let out a little air and reposition the ring accordingly. The tire is then inflated to the usual air pressure. The wheel can then be remounted on the vehicle. The mounted ring must rest firmly on the tire with its edge. The fit is important because otherwise the ring can become detached and thus pose a risk of accidents.

Red wall tires were even rarer!

There were also so-called Rotwand tires (Red Line tires). For example on the old Commodore GS. It had a thin red ring around the tire. The red wall tires were installed on the Commodore GS in 14 inch format (165 H 14). You can still buy them in different formats and from different manufacturers.

Examples are:

  • Universal 185HR15 3/8″ (10mm) Redline tires
  • US Royal 695-14 3/8″ (9.5 mm) Dual Redline tires
  • BF Goodrich 185/70R13 3/8″ (10mm) Redline tires
