The legal requirement that every vehicle on public roads requires a license plate is well known. Anyone who drives without a number plate must be fined at least 60 Euros calculate. But now the federal government has set new rules that affect all drivers. No matter what type of vehicle, whether car or motorcycle, whether combustion engine or electric vehicle - it is required by law to have a license plate. You get this by registering or re-registering your vehicle and even as a personalized one if you wish License plates.
Digital car registration
In a new ordinance, the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport has decided on further changes for 2023 that are intended to speed up and simplify the approval process. A significant innovation is that after registering your new vehicle up to 10 days without a general inspection sticker on the license plate and without Vehicle papers allowed to drive. This is intended to ease the transition between registration and receipt of the documents and plaques.
This major change is part of a broader plan that is modernizing the entire approval process. However, this is only part of the changes. From September 1, 2023, all drivers can register their new (or used) vehicle using their smartphone and drive off straight away, without having to wait for the documents and stickers to be sent. So far, drivers have had to wait until the documents are delivered by post. Existing license plates are natural vorausgesetzt!
valid from September 1st, 2023
The digital notification of admission serves as proof in the event of an event police check and allows the vehicle to be driven for up to 10 days, without having to physically present the vehicle documents and general inspection sticker. This eliminates the time-consuming administrative procedures and approval is much easier, faster and sometimes even cheaper. While these changes sound promising, it remains to be seen if the process will actually become easier.
Finally, there are concerns about the security and reliability of digital documents, and it's unclear how the changes will be received by motorists. Nevertheless, the new regulation is an important step towards modernized and more efficient car registration, and this makes the "i-Kfz" (internet-based vehicle registration for standard registration processes) that has been in existence since 2019 even more interesting.
The following applies to the digital registration of a brand-new vehicle:
- Vehicle must be brand new (is registered for the first time)
- you need the registration certificate part II (incl. hidden security code)
- current electronic confirmation of insurance (eVB no.) must be available
- IBAN (account) must be available (for collecting vehicle tax from the owner)
- New ID card (nPA) (alternatively electronic residence permit/eAT) with activated online ID function (eID)
- a designated card reader or smartphone with "ID App2" (for free)
And as of September 1, 2023, legal entities can also start applications via the i-Kfz portals. However, the respective federal states are responsible for the implementation of the new regulation.
Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
