If you want to give your car a new exterior color, this can be done at any time. Either by painting or by foiling. But the question is what to do next. According to the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV), the owner must state the color change in the vehicle documents register. However, only if the vehicle is re-registered or other changes have to be made to the vehicle documents. Incidentally, the detection of the color is mainly used for statistical purposes and is intended to help with a police search. However, the main inspection (HU/TÜV) does not check whether the color specified in the papers matches the actual paintwork.

Holder must notify the authorities of the change!

The color of the vehicle is listed in the registration certificate part I as a code ex works and is specified in the vehicle registration document in old documentation up to the year 2005. For example, a "5" means "blue". And the note "Blue" is also next to it. The exact color you need, for example, to buy a touch-up pencil, can usually be found as a code on (in) the car. Either on a sticker, a plaque in the engine compartment or on the frame of the driver's door. Exactly where the code is located varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

further information on the topic:

  • Repainting of the car does not have to be entered immediately in the vehicle documents. (Paragraph 13 of the vehicle registration authority / FZV)
  • If the entry is generally omitted, then this is basically an administrative offence. This "can" be punished with a fine of up to €2.000. Alternatively, the license can be withdrawn.
  • Such adversities are almost never prosecuted.
  • The timing of the painting is crucial! A little white lie can help.
  • When is the vehicle repainted? As far as we know, a partial painting/partial wrapping must be entered if the new color determines the appearance of the vehicle. In other words, if the new color is more than 50% available, then it should be entered.
  • Worst Case Scenario "Stickerbombing“ 51 or more percent on the vehicle: Sorry, but we're overwhelmed. The 51 or more percent would mean that the color change must be entered. However, we do not know exactly how the actual color is determined during sticker bombing. We also don't know how it is with flip-flop paintwork/foils or other surfaces whose color cannot be clearly determined. Usually but it will be so that the color which is most obviously present is entered in the papers.
