Everyone should know these rules for the green arrow - otherwise there is a risk of a fine!

The so-called Green arrow Allows drivers to turn right at a traffic light even though it is red. However, many drivers often use it incorrectly and there is a risk of fines. The green arrow originally comes from the GDR and was introduced in 1978. The entire Federal Republic uses it since March 1, 1994. The green arrows are an advantage for drivers as there are long waiting times at the traffic lights fall away, if to the right want to turn. However, the question now arises, why green arrows not at every traffic light are appropriate? Because the reality looks different and the number of green arrows is even decreasing. And the drivers are to blame for that too. Because a large part of the green arrow is simple falsch.

What distinguishes the green arrow?

  • The green arrow at the traffic lights is particularly popular with drivers.
  • Thanks to its traffic sign, drivers are allowed to cross red lights to turn right.
  • Most motorists are not aware that they still have to observe some rules.

The basic theory behind the green arrow is simple. At a red light is allowed turned right if there is a risk to other road users locked out is. Nevertheless, there are a few rules to be observed that many motorists are not familiar with. These are:

  • complete standstill like with the stop sign: the vehicle must completely stopped before turning right. If you just turn right like that, you have to go with one Fine of up to 70 euros and one point count in Flensburg.
  • The green arrow must not necessarily can be used: If you prefer to wait, you don't have to drive and can wait until the traffic light turns green.

Many drivers hold on not to the rules mentioned, especially not to the standstill like with the stop sign. These errors are particularly dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.

Dismantling of the green arrows in Germany

The RBB reported last December that Green Arrows in Berlin endanger traffic and even violate the StVO. The quote from the board of directors, Roland Stimpel, of the association Fuss eV is: "Green arrows harbor dangers for pedestrians and undermine traffic morale because they break the ban on waiting at red traffic lights.“A study carried out at the TU Dresden and an insurance company have also shown that 75 percent of drivers see a green arrow not stop first, just keep going. On the other hand, the green arrow was only just introduced. Since April last year, with the new traffic regulations and the introduction of the StVO amendment, the green arrow has been used for cyclists introduced.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
