This is how the depreciation of the car is calculated!

How appraisers calculate the depreciation of the car! It can happen at any time: Another traffic participant chooses the parking space next to you that is much too narrow and rams your fender. This is annoying, because it not only costs time and nerves, but your car now also has one Accident damage. In the case of young vehicles in particular, this leads to an often considerable Depreciation (Auto Depreciation) by the insurance company the person who caused the accident will be reimbursed. In the case of very old vehicles, however, the depreciation is negligible little or not at all determine. To calculate the depreciation, a expert used. Each appraiser proceeds differently with the calculation. We tell you how and according to which criteria the depreciation usually is calculated.

When does depreciation occur?

An impairment of the car occurs when the vehicle damaged by an accident. It is one compensation, by the motor liability insurance the person who caused the accident is granted. In principle, depreciation occurs in the event of accidental damage where repair is necessary. The depreciation is particularly noticeable for vehicles that not older than five years are. With older cars, however, the depreciation is hardly noticeable. The calculation of the impairment is usually carried out by the appraiser.

Mercantile or technical depreciation?

Experts differentiate between the calculations mercantile and the technical Depreciation. The mercantile depreciation is a damage that has been repaired, but still late effects can entail, which is why it is also necessary when selling the car, all accident damage stated in the purchase contract. technical Depreciation includes damage after the repair too changes in usability, technical securityt or des appearance can lead from the vehicle. If, for example, the newly painted fender differs slightly in color from the other components, this is a technical inferior value. Experts also speak of a technical reduction in value if the curb weight increases after the accident-related repair of a truck and the payload decreases as a result.

This is how the Ruhkopf-Sahm method works

As the procedure for calculating depreciation not required by law is, appraisers use different methods. The most common is after the Ruhkopf-Sahm method proceeded. The following criteria are considered here:

  • age of the car
  • Amount of damage
  • registration year
  • Repair costs
  • replacement value of the vehicle

The depreciation is based on percentage according to the relationship between repair costs and replacement value and is divided into three categories:

  • 10 to 30 percent
  • 30 to 60 percent
  • 60 to 90 percent

The repair costs are at the replacement value added, the sum of which is multiplied by the specified impairment factor using the Ruhkopf/Sahm method. This factor is based on the years since registration and the category under which the vehicle falls.

Year 10 - 30% 30 - 60% 60 - 90%
first year 5% 6% 7%
second year 4% 5% 6%
third year 3% 4% 5%

Example of the Ruhkopf/Sahm method:

The car is in the second year of registration and has a Replacement value from 40.000 euros. After an accident, the Repair costs 4.000 euros. The repair costs therefore make up ten percent of the replacement value. In addition, the vehicle is in the second year of admission located what a depreciation of four percent results. So the calculation is as follows:

Replacement value 40.000 euros + repair costs 4.000 euros = 44.000 euros
4% of 44.000 euros = 1.760 Euros

This results in one Depreciation of 1.760 euros.

Calculation Hamburg model:

Another way to calculate depreciation is this Hamburg model. With this variant, only the height of the mercantile inferior value estimated. Here, the experts assume that the maximum limit of reasonable impairment is based on the previous mileage. In addition, there are labor and material costs for the workshop. If the mileage of the car is more than 100.000 km, the claim for depreciation expires. And this also applies to cars those older than 5 years are. The calculation formula of the Hamburg model is:

Depreciation = (straightening work/body work) * total repair costs * rate

mileage repair costs depreciation
To 20.000 km
30%
To 50.000 km
20%
To 75.000 km
15%
To 100.000 km
10%
over 100.000km
0%

For example:

The car has a mileage of 40.000 km to date, which results in a factor of 20 percent. The material costs are 2.000 euros, the labor costs for the work amount to 6.000 euros. The total repair costs are therefore 8.000 euros. The straightening work costs 1.500 euros.

Depreciation = ($1.500/$6.000) * $8.000 * 0,20 = 0,25 * $1.600 = 400 Euros

So the depreciation is 400 Euros according to the Hamburg model, taking into account the age of the vehicle is not taken into account.

Calculation of impairment according to the Bremen model

Like the Hamburg model, the Bremen model is used to calculate the mercantile depreciation used. The mileage does not play a role here, but rather das Alter of the car. Depreciation is determined using a similar formula, just with a different ratio. In the above example, this is 25% if the vehicle is only 11 months old. This results in the following calculation:

Depreciation = ($1.500/$6.000) * $8.000 * 0,25 = 0,25 * $2.000 = 500 Euros

Age of vehicle Repair costs reduced value
to 6 months
30%
to 12 months
25%
to 24 months
20%
to 26 months
15%
to 60 months
10%

According to the Bremen model, the depreciation for the same vehicle is therefore 500 euros and thus 100 euros more than the Hamburg model.

How is car depreciation calculated?

  • There are different variants for calculating the depreciation: the Ruhkopf-Sahm method, the Hamburg and the Bremen model. For all models, different factors such as mileage, age or repair costs are included in the calculation.

What factors determine the depreciation after an accident?

  • The factors are different for each variant. In the most common, the Ruhkopf-Sahm method, the value for the calculation is based on the age of the vehicle, the year of registration, the extent of the damage, the repair costs and the replacement value.

Will the depreciation be reimbursed?

  • Yes. The owner of the car has priority for a payment of the depreciation. This is usually done by the motor vehicle liability insurance of the person who caused the accident. But the owner is not obligedto have the vehicle repaired.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it.
