Winter is coming: warming up the engine will be expensive!

Everyone knows it: when the warm days fade, it is uncomfortably cool in the car in the morning. Already in autumn, but especially in winter, one or the other then resort to the tried and tested trick: Let it warm up. Quickly out to the garage, the engine on and back in the house, to be able to comfortably drink another five minutes of coffee. And some people even take it easy Remote engine start system let install. Everything as comfortable as possible and only with advantages !? Because it's good for the engine if it only warms up slowly, isn't it? And it's still cozy and warm in the cabin.

Truisms without facts!

Winter is coming: warming up the engine will be expensive!

Unfortunately, the alleged “facts” are only half-knowledge and widespread popular errors that intelligent car owners shouldn't get on the glue. Here we clear up these misconceptions:

  1. NOT gentle on the engine
What may have been a common practice for old cars is now obsolete. Because according to the Spanish Volkswagen subsidiary Seat, warming up the modern engines can even damage them! Reason: Thanks to the low load when idling, the engine only heats up very slowly. As a result, the heating takes longer - which leads to less than optimal lubrication, because the oil temperatures are now naturally low. This means that it is possible that you risk even greater wear!
Kat likes to be warm before he goes to work. When cold, it emits 70 percent more pollutants.
Better: Drive off at low speed immediately after a cold start. As a result, the engine reaches operating temperature much faster and it also gets warm in the car.
  2. NOT warm faster in the interior
This is also a mistake. Because the interior of classic cars with internal combustion engines is heated by the engine heat. However, due to the fact that it is left running while standing, the cooling water only heats up very slowly, which means that hardly any heat can be released into the interior.
Better: Drive off straight away, it warms up faster in the car!
  3. NOT completely legal
Regardless of the time of year, running the engine unnecessarily is one misdemeanor. This is regulated in the road traffic regulations (StVO) §30. Specifically, there is a ban on running vehicle engines unnecessarily. This is intended to prevent unnecessary noise and avoidable exhaust emissions.

And if you now say: my private property is not subject to the StVO, so I can do what I want here, unfortunately this is only half correct. Your private property is usually not subject to the StVO, but then the respective State Immission Control Act (LImSchG) applies, in which this ban is also pronounced. But there are also exceptions: If you break down your car on the country road when it is below zero, for example, and you have to wait in the car, it may be permitted to leave the engine running. Checklist for the winter -> Ice scraping - engine on - buckle up - drive off with up to 2.500 rpm with a gasoline engine and less speed with a diesel.

Parking heater as an alternative!

Anyone who is now disgruntled about the cold season has an alternative to freezing: the auxiliary heater. It warms up the car gently, emits significantly fewer emissions and brings the interior to a pleasant temperature after just 15 to 20 minutes. There are even some models that also warm up the engine - which has a positive effect on the vehicle's fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The slight additional consumption due to the auxiliary heating is therefore hardly significant. Alternatively there is also electric parking heatersthat can be controlled via a timer, for example. They are not quite as effective and convenient, but they are significantly cheaper. What do you actually have to pay attention to when the vehicle is to be made fit for the dark season?
