Driving with an open trunk: what does the legislator say about it?

It has already happened to many motorists that they have bought too much in the hardware store or in the furniture store, and although they can put things in the trunk, it can no longer be closed. Is it allowed to drive home with the trunk open or do you have to bring another car or the contents out again? We give an insight into how the situation is regulated by law.

These rules apply to the transport of goods:

If the trunk of your car is too full, you have to not necessarily rent a van. When storage properly secured is, you are also allowed to come with open trunk drive. To do this, however, you must observe a few important rules:

  • The cargo is allowed not survive more than 1,5 meters.
  • When transported over a distance of less than 100 km, the transported goods may be up to 3 meters sticking out of the trunk.
  • As soon as the transported goods protrude more than 1 meter to the rear, it must specially marked .

Identify outstanding goods correctly:

A load protruding from the trunk must have at least one 30 by 30 cm large, red flag be marked. According to Paragraph 22 of the Road Traffic Act, this flag must be kept apart by means of a crossbar. If you do not have a flag, you can also use one as an alternative light red shield with the same dimensions, which swings transversely to the direction of travel, hang on the load or one cylindrical body of the same color and with a diameter of at least 35 cm on the cargo.

Make sure that the flag or shield no higher than 1,5 meters are attached above the roadway. If you are out and about at dusk or at night, you must also have a Fixture with red light attach in the same place. In addition, at this point in time, according to Paragraph 17 (1) of the StVO, a red reflector absolutely necessary.

The following objects must not protrude from the trunk during transport:

Should the load sideways more than 40 cm protrude beyond the lights of your car, then you have to take the load a light assemble. According to the StVO, this must be attached a maximum of 40 cm from the edge of the load. Individual poles and posts, horizontally lying plates or objects that are difficult to see are allowed to the side not stick out. Always secure the trunk lid with a tension belt. If you follow all of these instructions, you can easily enter the car with the trunk open and do not have to fear any penalty.
