Illegal: Polishing headlights is not allowed!

Many are not aware that there are parts on the vehicle that cannot be adjusted, let alone amendments may be made. The regulation for this can be found in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, in short StVZO. Part of this order also relates to the headlights and how to polish them, since failure can have serious consequences.

Headlight polish: the danger

For example, by polishing the headlights wear out, which can result in poorer visibility on the road. When polishing the lights can also indentations and grooves arise, which lead to a false break from the headlight light. These hazards therefore prohibit polishing, grinding, sealing or similar methods. Since there is always some material when working up the plastic on the headlight is removed, the spotlight is connected no longer in the original condition. In Germany, the headlights on the vehicle require a so-called type approvalbecause they have to meet various requirements. But a polish changes the design according to § 22a No.7 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations.

Loss of operating license due to refurbishment!

The TÜV makes the final decision on the legal commissioning of the vehicle with revised headlights. In the event that the cover plates of the headlight fall under the type approval (which is usually the case), these may not altered by painting, coating or other processing. If it is done anyway, then expires the type approval and the headlight must be checked again. A separate award is required in this case. A headlight is an independent, technical unit or component.

This in turn means that changes to it lead to the invalidation of the general operating permit. In summary, it can be said that there is a danger of coming Main inspection to fail if the headlight has been modified in any way. At this point it should also be said that it can hardly be understood (if done well) whether a headlight has been refurbished or not. Still, it's best to keep the lights through new or maintained used spare parts replace rather than polish or otherwise process.
