As we all know, there are many different sizes of car rims on the market. And based on the respective rim designation, you can determine whether a rim fits a certain type of vehicle or not. However, if you want to attach other rims to your vehicle than the standard ones, you should definitely read the rim labels in more detail (designations) employ. Because only on the basis of these codes can you see whether the new rims are also suitable for the respective vehicle. Since there is a standard for rims, you should definitely ensure that all legally binding values are observed. In principle it is the same as with the Tire designations. Every printed number and letter mean something.
What the names say!
There are now countless different types, shapes and designs of rims. In order to be able to distinguish these from one another, each model has a clearly defined name. The correct rim designation is usually made up of numbers and letters and is usually near the wheel hub bore or on one of the spokes (mostly on the back) to find. Since vehicles may only be used with precisely prescribed rim dimensions, you should stick to the models suggested by the manufacturer when selecting the rims or use the exact vehicle data to determine a suitable rim type from appropriate third-party providers. Attention: Information on the load capacity can usually only be found in the papers supplied. The same applies to the weight of the rim. This information is NOT noted on the rims.
A typical rim designation looks like this: 11,5 J x 22 H2 ET 10 LK 5 × 112
But what do the numbers and letters mean in detail?
- 8,5: This number stands for the exact width (rim width) of the rim and is measured in inches. So here 29,21 centimeters!
- J: This letter describes the nature of the rim flange, whereby J is the most common version for cars. Other designations would be H, P, K and JK.
- X: This letter provides information about the structure of the rim. In this case it would be a one-piece Drop rim.
- 22: This number stands for the diameter of the rims and is also given in inches. So here 55,88 centimeters.
- H2: This combination of numbers and letters provides information about the design of the rim base. In detail, H2 stands for a double hump design. Other names would be, for example, H, FH, FH2, CH, EH2 or EH2 +.
- AND 10: This mark stands for Offset the rim and is measured in millimeters.
- LK 5 × 112: This designation describes the diameter and the exact nature of the perforated rim. The designation means exactly 5 holes for wheel bolts and a rim diameter of 112 mm.
Can wheels with different rim designations be attached to the vehicle despite the current standard?
By law, the rim markings on the wheels must always correspond exactly to the specifications of the vehicle manufacturer. All rims approved for the vehicle can be found in the operating instructions or the CoC papers remove. If the values do not match, a specialist must check whether the new wheels can / may or must be fitted modification acceptance be carried out to ensure driving safety. An incorrect offset can have significant negative effects on the track width and the steering geometry of the vehicle. Furthermore, rims with the wrong offset can grind on various add-on parts from the chassis or protrude beyond the body.

And of course you must also pay attention to which tires can be fitted to the rims. The tire dimensions in terms of width, cross-section and diameter must be compatible with the desired rim and the information on the tire must also match the information on the vehicle with regard to the speed index or the load. If, for example, the cross-section does not fit, the speedometer shows the wrong speed and may have to be laborious readjusted . And finally ... The rim designation is an alphanumeric combination that provides information about the most important characteristics of the rim and must be observed.
