Throw garbage out of the car? That's how expensive it gets!

Unfortunately, many people simply carelessly throw their rubbish out of the car into nature along the German autobahns or federal highways, which is annoying in many ways and of course also illegal is. The disposed cigarette butts, coffee mugs, snack packaging or beverage bottles are an enormous burden on the environment, as such waste rots very slowly or not at all. For example, a cigarette butt needs up to five yearsuntil it decomposes naturally. Due to this damage to the environment and animals, motorists have to expect high fines if they do not dispose of cigarette butts and other rubbish correctly.

How long does it take for garbage to rot:

rubbish period until decay
Handkerchief 4 weeks
Paper bags 6 weeks
cigarette butt up to 5 years
plastic bags several years
Plastic bottles/drink cans 100+

Waste thrown out of the car can result in fines of up to 100.000 euros

In recent years, the fines for throwing garbage out of the car have increased enormously and can vary depending on the federal state. An overview of the penalties was created by the ADAC. It is particularly noticeable that fines of between 100 and 100.000 euros (!) can be calculated in North Rhine-Westphalia. Below is the list of all federal states:

State Penalty for cigarette packs Penalty for glass bottles
Baden-Württemberg 50 to 250 € 100 to 800 €
Bavaria 20 € 35 to 80 €
Berlin 40 to 80 € 75 to 800 €
Brandenburg 35 to 500 € 35 to 500 €
Bremen 20 € 20 to 250 €
Hamburg 35 to 150 € 35 to 150 €
Hessen 50 € 50 €
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern not specified not specified
Lower Saxony 10 to 50 € 50 to 100 €
Nordrhein-Westfalen 100 to 100.000 € 100 to 100.000 €
Rhineland Palatinate 50 to 250 € 100 to 800 €
Saarland 10 to 100 € 25 to 150 €
Saxony 10 to 40 € 25 to 200 €
Sachsen-Anhalt not specified not specified
Schleswig-Holstein not specified not specified
Thuringia 5 to 30 € 20 to 200 €

Garbage is expensive for the polluter and expensive for the environment

According to calculations by the TU Darmstadt from 2014, there are costs of 9.000 euros per kilometer of motorway for the disposal of waste. But what can you do as a driver if rubbish has accumulated on the way?

  • Use a car trash can.
  • Store meals and snacks in fresh storage boxes and in reusable packaging.
  • If the bin is already full, take your rubbish with you to the nearest bin or, if necessary, take it home with you.
  • Make your way to waste sorting facilities at manned or unmanned parking lots.
