Tuning with a flap exhaust - what is allowed?

Last year the topic of sports exhaust systems and especially flap systems and their "unnecessary" noise boiled up again. Cars with an exhaust system with a valve function would be "Malefactors for unnecessary street noise " and with regard to the Paragraph 30 of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) probably the complete AUS is used for all flap systems. It's not that bad, because damper exhaust systems are not generally prohibited but only limited, But what is allowed and what is not allowed? How much decibel is an exhaust allowed to trombone in the environment, and what changes are allowed for an improved soundscape? The Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) regulates this quite clearly. A new vehicle type from the 1. July 2016 must comply with certain limits. These are divided into different car classes. The driving noise must be in the range from 72 to 75 decibels.

more power = more volume

If a car has a lot of power ex works, the background noise can increase. From the year 2026, however, the legislator plans to gradually reduce the background noise throughout Europe by up to 4 DB. And there is a high probability that something will happen again with regard to the damper systems. In 2016, the EU regulation 540/2014 came into force, which indicates that replacement damper systems must not be louder than the factory exhaust system of the vehicle or the legal limit values. If this is the case, the system violates Paragraph 30 of the StVZO. Older car with "registered or standard“However, damper systems have grandfathering. And new valve systems can still be registered if they are not louder than the series in the measurement process.

if necessary, ask TÜV, Dekra & Co.

The automakers are currently provoking, especially for the powerful models, the legal limits completely. For example, a Hyundai i30N is available 109 decibels in the vehicle registration and is thus only 6 DB quieter like a Lamborghini Huracan Performante. The safest variant for tuners is a flap system with ECE or E-mark. Here, no subsequent inspection by the TÜV must be made and also a registration in the vehicle documents is not required. In addition, the systems can be used legally throughout Europe. This also applies to sports exhaust systems with EEC certification. Here, however, with the restriction to the EUMember States, If the exhaust system has only an ABE certification mark, it is only allowed in Germany without a test and additional registration.

Of course that had not been the case.
