From November 29th (November 28th: Preview Day) to December 7th, more than 500 exhibitors at the Essen Motor Show will show what their interpretation of tuning looks like. But be careful, not everything that is offered at a trade fair is automatically legal. You can actually tune everything: sporty series automobiles, classic cars, motorcycles, boats, mopeds, scooters, etc. But with each of these vehicles, you must ensure that it is approved and allowed.

Tuning & Law! You should pay attention to that!As an expert you get to see a lot, and unprofessional tuning measures are the order of the day. (This information came from TÜV Süd in Munich) If the expert does not accept the change made because it is not compliant with the STVZO, the vehicle's operating license expires immediately. Therefore, every tuner or hobbyist should inquire in advance whether the desired project is even feasible and would get the blessing of TÜV, Dekra, etc. But even if there is no general operating permit for the desired component or generally no documents are available, this does not mean that it cannot be implemented. Many measures can be implemented by individual acceptance, but it always makes sense to clarify this "BEFORE". We give you a couple of statutory regulations:

  • Ground clearance "should" be at least 8cm. (here there are exceptions that are better asked in advance)
  • Front headlights “must” be at least 50cm (lower edge of headlight) above the ground.
  • Chiptuning without ABE or TGE must be assessed individually
  • E-mark must always be present. Brake pads from China, for example, do not have this symbol and must not be used.
  • Install xenon or LED lamps? Not just like that! Cannot be implemented without headlight cleaning system and automatic headlight range adjustment. (Tip: Everything about headlight range adjustment / retrofitting of headlamp levelers)

Insurance is also an important criterion! If you change something on the car then ring the bell at your insurance company and say what you have changed. A set of rims for € 10.000 is not automatically insured if it has not been explicitly included in the insurance scope beforehand. Likewise, changed engine performance etc. Who builds such an accident and has not reported the possible additional performance of the vehicle could get problems.

About Thomas Wachsmuth

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
