Less AMG from 2021? Does Mercedes have to cut sales?

New fleet limits for CO2 emissions prevent car manufacturers from building their vehicles in the conventional way. The EU threatened billions of euros in penalties to stimulate responses to the new fleet emissions targets. The example of the Mercedes sports brand AMG shows particularly hard effects of the new limit values. The automobile newspaper coach refers to an article in the Financial Times and reports that the car manufacturer from Swabia could face drastic cuts. So that the company does not have to pay high fines, AMG sales in the Stuttgart parent company would have to be reduced by up to 75 percent. In the case of strongly motorized types without an AMG label, Mercedes could also be forced to stop selling such vehicles with regard to CO2 emissions. There is a background to this drastic measure. Over the past few years, Mercedes has not been able to reduce its fleet emissions as much as other manufacturers. Mercedes sold fewer plug-in hybrids and electric cars than the competition. Other manufacturers had rather campaigned for the effective reduction of fleet emissions.

C-Class only with four-cylinder

According to AutoCar, Mercedes currently has a fleet cut of 138 grams of CO2 per kilometer, but the value in 2021 must be a maximum of 100 grams according to EU specifications. In a conversation with AutoCar, a Mercedes spokesman tried to put the high cuts mentioned by the Financial Times into perspective. He did not want to give a clear denial in the course of the interview, however, emphasized the forthcoming hybridization of various AMG models. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 of the next generation W 206 is coming into focus. The C-Class from Affalterbach impressed above all with the power and sound of the V8 biturbo, the successor, on the other hand, probably scores with a turbo four-cylinder with environmentally friendly electrical support.

Audi & BMW probably still with six-cylinder

The competitor of the BMW M3 thus switches from one extreme to the other, leaving out the step of an in-line six-cylinder. The M3, on the other hand, will definitely be equipped with the inline six-cylinder in the coming generation G80 and it will probably look very similar with the new Audi RS4. The future will show what effects the EU's CO2 requirements will have on other car brands. In any case, it is already evident today that a number of manufacturers cannot easily meet the EU requirements. German brands such as BMW, Audi and Porsche will also notice the drastic effects of the new limit values due to the new CO2 requirements.
