BILSTEIN B4 air suspension modules for the aftermarket

Air suspension modules from the aftermarket are an interesting option for repairs that are fair value. BILSTEIN should know: Because the company developed the technology to series production level together with Mercedes-Benz in 1997 - in the S-Class W220. Air suspension systems have learned a lot since then: A current example is the Land Rover Defender, which is equipped with the semi-active DampTronic® technology from BILSTEIN ex works. It enables a particularly wide spread of damping forces for good off-road performance with high road comfort at the same time. Complex systems also place high demands on the quality of spare parts. And yet, reconditioned old parts of various quality levels are often on the market.

Genuine new part or remanufactured?

The low price is bought here with various disadvantages. Workshops that want to offer their customers repairs in line with current value without compromising on driving behavior can therefore hardly ignore the BILSTEIN B4 air suspension module. As a multiple OE supplier, the company knows the technology inside out and does not have to laboriously reconstruct it from scratch. This step is usually unprofitable for non-series equipment manufacturers or cannot be met by the development effort, which is why remanufactured components are offered instead.

Some time ago, BILSTEIN itself analyzed where the pitfalls lie in the details of reconditioned old parts. For this purpose, an air suspension module purchased on the Internet was examined as an example: In addition to unprofessionally replaced wear parts, a more than ten-year-old shock absorber from BILSTEIN was found there. In addition, manufacturers of remanufactured components often shut down the electromagnetic control valve instead of replacing it. This turns a high-end system with active control into a passive one. But even if this does not happen: The Achilles' heel of reconditioned air suspension modules are always the shock absorbers. They are generally taken over from the old part in their current condition and have an incomprehensible mileage. This makes it an incalculable risk, as the damping force can vary depending on the level of wear - and that on all four wheels. With a B4 air suspension module, on the other hand, cars drive like they did on the first day - and only the price is saved; but not in terms of security and comfort.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
