The improved directional stability and optimum driving behavior, which the BILSTEIN B6 delivers as an improved series replacement, pay off in poor road conditions and winding routes as well as with heavily loaded vehicles or when pulling a trailer. The precise handling, which is brought about by the gas pressure shock absorber with increased damping force, not only serves safety, but also improves the driving experience. So there are many arguments in favor of the BILSTEIN B6. However, many interested parties are unclear as to whether the two-pipe or one-pipe version is preferable. The latter is being asked more and more frequently by customers on the assumption that it is definitely superior to the two-pipe version. This can definitely not be confirmed in general.
“Whether the two-pipe or one-pipe version is the right choice can only be decided individually according to the vehicle type and the area of application. First of all, there are technical installation hurdles. A B6 twin-tube damper can be installed up to a maximum incline of 45 degrees. The single-pipe version, on the other hand, can even be installed upside-down, i.e. upside down. In any case, we will find the right and best solution for the customer, ”explains Mustafa Yavuz, a trained master mechanic and responsible for BILSTEIN Technical Support. More than 90% of all series vehicles are equipped with twin-tube shock absorbers as standard. The BILSTEIN B6 as an improved series replacement in the two-pipe version is therefore the first logical choice.
But when does the single-pipe version make more sense? The best example here are sports cars, which can benefit the most from this technology. The B6 single-tube models have a larger working piston area, which ensures higher damping force and better handling. Due to the so-called upside-down construction with the characteristic “thick piston rod”, the front axle leg can also absorb significantly higher cornering forces, which is expressed in an even more precise steering behavior.
Regardless of whether it is one-pipe or two-pipe technology: thanks to the same functional dimensions as with the standard damper, replacing the springs is just as unnecessary as entering them in the vehicle documents. The conversion is therefore cheaper than a complete chassis. Drivers do not have to fear the loss of valuable features: Thanks to special versions with DampTronic®, even the functions of an active chassis with electronic control that is available as standard are retained in full. This is where BILSTEIN's original equipment expertise pays off across the board.
