Two epoch-making vehicles are celebrating their 2022th birthday in 50: There is the W116 from Mercedes-Benz - the first S-Class by name - and the BMW E12, which founded the 5-series. As representatives of the upper and upper middle class, both still surprise today with their good handling. Nevertheless, then as now, there were people who were not entirely satisfied with the standard condition of their car, regardless of the type, and therefore opted for a chassis upgrade in the form of the BILSTEIN B6 high-performance shock absorber.
BILSTEIN B6 shock absorbers
One of them is classic car collector Heinrich Hövelberndt, owner of a long-established car dealership in Gelsenkirchen. "Our goal is always to achieve the best possible perfection, especially in the area of driving dynamics," Hövelberndt lectures about his classics. An experience from a long time ago that he has not forgotten was formative: “I had a BMW 3.0 Si at the time. It had 200 hp and could keep up with a Porsche. But the chassis was cheese”. As a consequence, he installed the yellow BILSTEIN B6 in his car: "I drove out of the hall and just thought to myself: 'Wow, amazing!'" The BILSTEIN B6 is still available today as an improved series replacement, with many further developments - for current ones Vehicles as well as for youngtimers and real classics. It is often a clever and, due to its series-identical functional dimensions, registration-free alternative to dampers that require registration, for example if no tuning optics is desired.
Mercedes S-Class W116 and BMW 5 Series E12 are half a century old
However, the name BILSTEIN B6 does not mean a standard product based on the motto "One size fits all". The designation is much more than a philosophy that summarizes a group of high-performance shock absorbers that are always noticeably better than the respective production shock absorbers - be it in a car from 1972 or from 2022. For comparison: BILSTEIN summarizes all gas pressure shock absorbers with B4, that correspond 100% to the original in terms of quality and function. Always exceeding this requirement is the vocation of the BILSTEIN B6, which is also available without registration for the Mercedes S-Class W116 and the BMW 5 Series E12.
And since the gas pressure shock absorber was already in place when the two icons were built, the retrofitting has no effect on the H license plate capability - but it does have a positive effect on the performance. The BILSTEIN B6 brings significantly more damping force into play with a high level of comfort and thus offers higher power reserves, which have a positive effect on rapid load changes. Among other things, it reduces rolling and provides more stability and safety. This applies in particular to heavily loaded vehicles or when towing a trailer. A major advantage in the competitive environment is that the shock absorber is not only adapted for different car models based on data sheets: Individual adjustment always takes place in complex driving tests.
