Why a chassis is more than shock absorbers and springs!

As part of the video series "Compact chassis - powered by BILSTEIN Academy", garages regularly receive valuable practical tips. In the latest episode, Rainer Popiol, Head of the BILSTEIN Academy, and Mustafa Yavuz from BILSTEIN Technical Support look at chassis components that are often literally overshadowed by shock absorbers and springs - and yet they are extremely important. Motorists can now watch the following video and also secure limited BILSTEIN workshop gloves (only while stocks last!). All you have to do is use the form at the bottom of the linked website to tell the shock absorber specialists how you found out about "Compact chassis - powered by BILSTEIN Academy".

Chassis compact

When we talk about the chassis of a car, we usually only talk about shock absorbers and springs. But chassis components such as the dome bearing, the dust protection sleeve and the pressure buffer are also part of it. And it is precisely these components that should always be changed when replacing the shock absorber.

Also check wishbones, coupling rods and tie rods regularly

In order to ensure driving safety and comfort, all chassis components must be checked regularly. For example when checking the chassis, but at the latest when shock absorbers have to be replaced. An important example is the Domlager. "The strut bearing is the link between the running gear and chassis on the vehicle, which also enables the rotary movement with a MacPherson strut," explains Mustafa Yavuz. Other add-on parts such as the coupling rods and stabilizers, the wishbones, tie rod ends and tie rods must also be checked, as they ensure the correct axle geometry.

When replacing the damper, also change the dust protection sleeve and pressure buffer

With every shock absorber exchange, the dust protection sleeve and the pressure buffer should also be exchanged. And with good reason - after all, they fulfill important tasks in the "chassis system", as Mustafa Yavuz explains: "The dust protection sleeve has the task of protecting the shock absorber, the piston rod and also the locking assembly from stone chipping. The compression buffer limits the travel so that the components are protected and the bike can move freely.”

Once it has been determined which parts are required, a first look at the online catalog on BILSTEIN.com is a good idea, as Rainer Popiol recommends: "Here I can make an initial pre-selection and then see what information is stored there : Is there a normal series replacement damper, is there perhaps the high-performance BILSTEIN B6 damper, which we specifically tested again in road tests? And also important: What attachments do I need? It's all in this online catalogue.” The parts can then be ordered from dealers or wholesalers. Incidentally, all standard spare parts from BILSTEIN always fit the original parts.

Easily order and install chassis components

For the installation of the suspension components, it is always important to the suspension professionals at BILSTEIN that everything runs smoothly in the workshop. The brand focuses on the installation instructions. "If we find that the vehicle manufacturer's installation instructions lead to problems, we create our own assembly instructions and also provide additional information such as videos," reports Rainer Popiol. And if all else fails, workshop professionals can always contact BILSTEIN technical support, even if the vehicle is already on the lift and information is needed quickly.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
