Bilstein: 7-post vertical dynamics test bench at the Nürburgring!

BILSTEIN is consistently expanding its service for automobile manufacturers, racing teams and tuning companies. In Meuspath, directly at the Nürburgring, the shock absorber and chassis specialist is opening a new BILSTEIN location with a brand new one Vertical dynamics test bench. This should not only benefit the development of its own premium products. Customers and partners in particular can then fall back on state-of-the-art technology and advice from BILSTEIN for their chassis analysis and development: With the new BILSTEIN 7-Post-Rig, the only one directly at the Nürburgring, every race track can be on one Drive place. The central location at the Nürburgring results in unbeatable cost and time savings for customers and partners.

The only 7-post vertical dynamics test bench at the Nürburgring

The location in the industrial park was not chosen by chance. Because this is where the heart of performance development in the automotive industry beats: Not only all well-known automobile manufacturers and tuning companies test on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. In the industrial area directly on the Döttinger Höhe, many automobile manufacturers also operate their own test centers, and numerous international racing teams are based here. “Our credo has always been to be where we can support our partners. A test bench somewhere in the province was never an option, ”said Dr. Peter Klaus Kirner, Chairman of the Management Board at BILSTEIN. "That is why it was clear to us early on that there could only be one location for our 7-post vertical dynamics test bench: In the heart of motorsport - right on the Nürburgring!"

Technological possibilities that are unique in Europe

The Ennepetal company is bringing Formula 1 technology in the field of chassis development to the Nürburgring for the first time. The new BILSTEIN 7-Post vertical dynamics test bench is one of the most modern in Europe. The “7-Poster” can be used to examine the structural behavior of a very wide range of vehicles: Here, four hydraulic rams simulate the lane excitations in a vertical direction. Acceleration sensors and spring deflection sensors on each wheel and on the chassis then measure the vehicle and wheel movements that result from the excitation of the hydraulic ram. In this way, an optimal spring-damper design can be determined. The three additional hydraulic rams make it possible to take an even closer look at the complex driving dynamics - and can even simulate the influences of aerodynamics on the chassis: They not only simulate the downforce but also pitch and roll movements of the body.

With the new BILSTEIN 7-Post-Rig, complete racetracks can also be simulated so that racing teams can test track-specific setups. Even the driving behavior on individual route sectors can be examined. The advantages are obvious: racing teams and manufacturers get an exact and complete understanding of the chassis in a very short time and can jointly examine and optimize the driving behavior for certain parameters and develop the optimal settings.

You also benefit from enormous time savings with less wear on the expensive mechanics and overall reduced costs. In addition, the location directly at the Nürburgring results in significantly lower logistics costs and there is the advantage of repeatability, which is not available on the racetrack.

The all-round carefree service also includes holistic, highly professional support and analysis. Martin Malinowski will be responsible for the operation of the BILSTEIN 7-Post-Rig. The engineer has been working intensively on vertical dynamics test benches for around 15 years. "There are only a few engineers who have more experience with 7-post rigs than Martin Malinowski," says Martin Flick, Head Of Motorsport at BILSTEIN, happily. Among other things, the 41-year-old worked for various 7-post vertical dynamics test rig operators for many years and was jointly responsible for five world championship titles for the Formula 1 team as a test & development engineer at Mercedes-AMG-Petronas.

New level of development for holistic chassis tuning

"Particularly in OE series development, the requirements placed on the chassis are becoming more and more demanding and complex," reveals Carsten Obst, Vice President Sales OEM at BILSTEIN. "With our new location at the Nürburgring, state-of-the-art equipment and over 60 years of experience in the field of shock absorber and chassis development, we can support our partners and customers in an even more targeted manner."

Thanks to the perfect symbiosis of experience, technology and the diverse test options on the road, racetrack and test bench, BILSTEIN guarantees a new level of development for holistic chassis tuning.

Even more performance in the aftermarket

“And the development and further development of our aftermarket products will also benefit from the completely new possibilities,” says Christoph Henkel, Head of Sales, Product Management & Marketing - Aftermarket Business at BILSTEIN. “Traditionally, we don't just want to meet the high expectations of our customers. We want to constantly surpass them - whether in the area of series replacement or in the performance aftermarket. In addition to our unique test drive, our new test bench therefore offers us another opportunity to achieve the perfect driving experience for every product. ”On July 13, 2021, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place on the new building that had already begun - right on the roundabout in the center of the Nürburgring industrial estate. There is no getting around BILSTEIN.
