Tutorial: Convert license plate lighting to LED

[Display]

As in our contribution to the topic "LED license plate lighting - what is allowed / what is not?" We have not only theoretically dealt with the conversion of license plate lighting to LED but also practical. Depending on the vehicle, the effort is of course more or less extensive. In most vehicles, the conversion is likely to be accomplished in a few minutes and very easily. Test vehicle was our VW Phaeton 4 has installed individual halogen bulbs for illumination of the license plate and for which we consequently 4 LED (Light Emitting Diode) Have ordered license plate lights.

left the old module / right the LED variant

We decided for complete LED modules from going fast for € 15,95 per piece. The LED lights are installed using the plug & play method and each come with 18 LEDs. In total, “72” LEDs with 7000 Kelvin (daylight white) luminosity provide for the illumination of ours 3D license plate. Since the Phaeton detects defective lightbulbs via the on-board electronics and displays them as an error message in the instrument cluster, we had to ensure that the corresponding Can Bus modules are included, which prevent this error message due to the LEDs. Incidentally, the LED license plate light comes with an E-mark and is therefore free of registration. By the way: You can find out which penalties threaten in the event of incorrectly activated or not activated lighting in our large article onLights on the car: function, regulations, fines“Read.
