Can you still remember when we arrived at our end of December VW Phaeton 3.0 V6 tdi the brand new RaceChip GTS have tested? Due to a defect in the performance test bench of our tuning partner, we were unfortunately unable to provide any concrete figures, but tried to show with three videos that the tuning box including APP control conjured up a noticeable increase in performance in the Wolfsburg. This was mainly noticeable in everyday life because the significantly increased torque was particularly noticeable here. Our Phaeton drove almost every incline a gear higher than usual and the system could still be individually configured using the free app.

After about 3.000 easily driven kilometers, we wanted to know now whether a difference to a chip tuning on the engine control part is noticeable again and have the GTS away and us on the way to specialized in chip tuning team of Special Concepts (08312 Lauter) made. One thing in advance, this time too we had to do without a measurement on a dynamometer. It is still not ready for use again. We hope, however, that we can at least prove the performance ultimately achieved on a suitable test bench in the next few weeks. However, due to the installed software, it is too late to determine the series values. No matter…!

What is different when tuning via OBD?

There's more - Chiptuning VW Phaeton 3.0 V6 tdiOBD II is standard since 1996 at the latest. Diagnostic and test devices can be connected via this connection, and the connection is also used to load the chip tuning software. Normally, the OBD II interface connector is in the engine or passenger compartment. With the Phaeton, it is close to the pedal for the manual handbrake and thus very easy to reach.

Our vehicle should have a balanced increase in power and torque which is noticeable in the lower, middle and upper revs. The advantage is the fact that the increased torque in the partial load range leads to lower fuel consumption and the exhaust gas behavior is virtually unchanged at the same time. The original software is the basis for the chip tuning software. Important is also the fact the changes of original specific values, settings like the vehicle ID, engine number or the correct transmission version by the new software not .

Personal wishes can be considered

For each vehicle, it is possible to read the original software of the vehicle via the diagnostic interface and customize the tuning file for the vehicle, as well as the personal wishes of the owner. For example, one should consider how high the current mileage of the vehicle is and also the distribution of extra power can be adjusted. Is the owner of a higher torque especially at low speed important or should increase the power noticeably at high speed? These special customer requests can be mixed with the tuning software and make the OBD chip tuning so special. If the tuning file is then adapted according to individual requirements, the software is transmitted to the engine control unit via the diagnostic interface.

At the moment this is completely subjective and not substantiated with numbers because, as already mentioned, the dynamometer is currently not available due to a defect. But that too popometer can already make a statement and it is consistently positive. Our VW Phaeton now looks even stronger, especially in the lower to medium speed range, and the difference is huge, especially with regard to the production vehicle. With "normal" driving, the six-speed automatic shifts back significantly later and sometimes not at all, because there is always enough power available. We would like to clarify the whole thing with a short video. The video on the left shows the highest performance level of the RaceChip GTS tuning box and the video on the left shows the current state with the chip tuning software installed on the engine control unit Special Concepts.

With the same route and almost similar temperatures, the video shows a difference in acceleration. In the Race Mode of the RaceChip GTS Box, our Phaeton accelerates from 0-140 km / h in approx. 14 seconds and the vehicle now accomplishes the same discipline in just over 12 seconds at even slightly higher outside temperatures. The difference is clearer compared to the series where the V6 needs almost 14 seconds to accelerate to 130 km / h. Of course, it is clear to us that these simple speedometer videos are not really reliable, but they at least reflect a first impression.
