Still far from the winter 2017, we have adopted a topic that will be up to date in a good 3 months. The car battery and its durability! Before you know it, winter is just around the corner and the mercury drops below 0 degrees. Winter is always a big challenge, especially for older cars. Most older vehicles have installed the same battery for years, which is then no longer as fresh as it was in the beginning. Logical consequence -> when starting in the morning nothing happens and the engine stays off. But how does it even come about? Batteries no longer achieve 100% of their capacity at low temperatures. The colder it gets, the more the battery's performance suffers. As a result, the starter no longer receives enough power and consequently the engine cannot be started. And the increased demand for electricity in winter naturally also plays a role.

Many consumers such as the heated rear window, heated seats, lights and many other electrical utilities require electricity that comes from the car battery. The alternator hardly manages to charge the battery during this time because it is needed almost exclusively for consumers. This makes it difficult for the alternator to operate over short distances, as there is simply no time to sufficiently charge the battery. If the car no longer starts in winter, you can only help yourself with starting help. However, a second vehicle is not always nearby and a jump start cable is also required. To make matters worse, with newer vehicles the jump start can end in disaster.

What's in the box

The next winter is coming - ANKER Powerbank

The abundant electronics often react extremely sensitive to fluctuations in the board voltage. If things go badly, a jump start can destroy the entire on-board electronics. The perfect solution is the Anker Powerbank. The power bank is so small that it can easily be stowed in the trunk. The system gives you the certainty of being able to start your vehicle on your own and is not dependent on the help of others. A highlight is the fact that the power bank by means of supplied micro USB cable, the phone, and any other device with USB charging cable, can charge and so can be selected with empty battery again the emergency call, etc.

In addition, a flashlight is integrated in the power bank that shines really brightly. It can either be permanently lit or flash SOS. The state of charge of the power bank can be followed on the left side via a status display. In winter you should of course charge the device from time to time because the power bank is like the car battery, it is discharged in cold temperatures. The system holds its voltage for approx. 3 months without recharging. Charging is carried out using the enclosed 12V adapter or a power pack for a normal 230V socket.

Of course we tested it!

We have completely drained the car battery of our VW Golf 1.6tdi 4Motion and connected the ANKER PowerBank to the battery with a charge level of approx. 25%. To do this, we have to connect the red / black cables to Plus & Minus as with normal jump-starters and the system can already show what's inside.

As you can see, this does not work on the USB port, of course, but on a separate port. It is a special connector equipped with 2 terminals and corresponding electronics. The red light informs that something is wrong (Power bank connected incorrectly or short circuit), and the green LED lights up, a start attempt can be made. With a motor up to approx. 2 liters displacement approx. 20 start attempts can be made with fully loaded power bank. According to the manufacturer up to 400A peak current is reached which is also for diesel engines up to 2,5 liters of displacement no problem. For a gasoline engine, the system extends to about 3 liter displacement.

Our conclusion: Top features for a small price. Absolutely recommended for small to medium cars.
