FIAT 131 Abarth RALLY (1977)

The FIAT 131 Abarth Rally was one of the most successful rally cars of the late 1970s. Built according to the rules of the so-called Group 4, the sedan achieved three world championship titles in the constructors' championship (1977, 1978 and 1980). The German FIAT factory driver Walter Röhrl was also the driver's world champion in 1980. The outstanding characteristics of the rally vehicle with the unmistakable scorpion crest of the Abarth brand included speed, robustness, reliability and ease of maintenance.

The FIAT 131 Abarth Rally replaced the FIAT 1976 Abarth Rally as the official factory team car in 124. FIAT's strategy was again to demonstrate the reliability and potential of an everyday model under the extreme conditions of rallying. The 131 Rally series model was developed jointly by FIAT, Abarth and bodywork specialist Bertone. Planned from the start as a basis for rally use, the vehicle largely adopted the forms of the conventional two-door FIAT 131 Mirafiori. The body was significantly lightened using aluminum and plastic components. For the first time, sporty low-profile Pirelli P7 tires were also available for a mass-produced sedan.

The standard 140 hp in-line four-cylinder in the FIAT 131 Rally, with a displacement of 1.995 cubic centimetres, double overhead camshaft and four valves per cylinder, offered ideal conditions for an increase in performance. Supplied with fuel by two double carburetors, the rally version of the engine produced more than 215 hp at 7.000 rpm and a maximum torque of 225 Newton meters at 5.600 rpm. The sports transmission already had five forward gears as standard. A limited-slip differential in the rear axle, together with the independent wheel suspension on McPherson struts, ensured optimum traction.

The Group 131 variant of the FIAT 4 Abarth Rally shown at “Autolook Week” is an original works car. It was mostly driven by Finn Markku Alén, who won the 1978 FIA Cup for Drivers, the precursor to the Drivers' World Championship introduced a year later. Restored in the Stellantis Heritage workshops, the FIAT 131 Abarth Rally sports the legendary Alitalia livery. In recent years, the vehicle has delighted visitors at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England and at the Schloss Dyck Classic Days in Germany.

LANCIA DELTA HF INTEGRALE EVOLUTION (1992)

Unlike the FIAT 131 Abarth Rally, the Lancia Delta rally version retained few features of the production vehicle designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1979 and awarded "Car of the Year" in 1980. Four generations of the all-wheel drive Lancia Delta HF followed from 1986 to 1991, delivering an unprecedented series of successes in the World Rally Championship: six consecutive constructor titles (1987 to 1992), four driver titles (1987 to 1989 and 1991), 46 overall victories in the world championship rounds and a title in the near-production class (Group N) in 1987. Lancia Delta drivers were also European Rally Champions six times (1987 to 1991 and 1993) and also won the Group N title twice at European level (1988 and 1989). XNUMX).

With each generation, the rally version of the Lancia Delta improved in terms of engine power and body dimensions. The factory team was always one step ahead of its competitors. The 4 Lancia Delta HF 1987WD featured all-wheel drive with a ZF limited-slip differential in the front, Ferguson center differential with viscous coupling and a limited-slip rear differential. The performance of the two-liter engine increased from the standard 165 hp to 265 hp at 6.250 rpm for the so-called Group A variant. In 1988 the Lancia Delta HF Integrale was launched. Visual differences to the previous version were the widened fenders and larger intake openings for cooling air at the front of the vehicle. The Lancia Delta HF Integrale also had a new six-speed gearbox and was 23 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

With the further development of the cylinder head from two to four valves per cylinder, the switch to the Lancia Delta HF Integrale 1989V took place in 16. A bulge in the middle of the bonnet was characteristic - necessary to accommodate the now taller cylinder head. In the Group A version, the two-liter four-cylinder now delivers more than 295 hp at 7.000 rpm. The technical innovations also included the electronically controlled clutch, the radiator fan driven by a hydraulic motor, telemetry for data transmission during service breaks, and above all the variably programmable engine electronics.

Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16V Evolution

In 16, the Lancia Delta HF Integrale 1991V Evoluzione was the last evolutionary stage of the successful vehicle concept. The fenders were wider again, and an adjustable roof spoiler allowed the aerodynamics to be changed depending on the rally. The main changes affected the engine. In order to limit the performance of Group A vehicles to around 300 hp, the regulations stipulated an air restrictor in the intake tract from 1991.
