Environmentally friendly hydrogen drive for your car?

Environmentally friendly hydrogen drive for your car?

A hydrogen drive is an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to gasoline and diesel powered vehicle engines. Hydrogen is a natural component of air and water. When burned in the engine, water vapor is produced instead of toxic exhaust gases. It is therefore considered to be non-polluting and is easier to extract than petroleum-derived fossil fuels.

Not completely pollutant free

Meanwhile, there are already combustion engines that use hydrogen from industrial waste, which does not have to be cumbersome processed. However, the operation itself has not yet been completely free of pollutants. The combustion of hydrogen produces no carbon monoxide, but still nitric oxide. In addition, lubrication of the engine by lubricants that generate small amounts of exhaust gas is still required. The resulting exhaust gases already comply with the requirements of the exhaust emission standard EURO 6. In addition, work is already underway to develop catalysts to reduce nitrogen oxide levels.

Are there already hydrogen engines?

The first hydrogen engines were already used by 2010. Until 2015 they were used in Berlin city buses. However, it was only a test operation, which was then set again. The final report confirmed the hydrogen drive's high level of operational safety and cost-effectiveness with short-term use, but so far there has been no change in public transport to hydrogen propulsion systems. For the private cars it looks better. Here, some manufacturers are already selling hydrogen-powered vehicles. However, you will come with a tank filling so far only about 475 km far. With a petrol engine, it is up to 850 km, which is almost twice the distance. That can still be a problem at present, as the hydrogen filling station network in Germany is not yet fully developed. However, the nationwide expansion is still to be achieved in the year 2020.

What should you consider when upgrading your car to a hydrogen drive?

With the conversion to hydrogen, you could easily achieve compliance with the exhaust emission standard EURO 6 and avoid driving bans for a diesel car. You're environmentally friendly on the way and save fuel. However, the conversion itself is currently not really worthwhile or even possible. So far there is still no really affordable and retrofittable hydrogen combustion engine with market maturity. And also because of the incomplete filling station network, it is advisable not yet to switch to a pure hydrogen car or somehow strive for a retrofit. With a conventional gasoline or diesel car you are much better advised. An e-car is easier to operate for us. Hydrogen can be produced even at home, by electrolysis of water, but on the road it will certainly be a problem if you simply can not find a gas station. Since hydrogen propulsion is still a relatively young technology, further improvements are expected over the next few years.

Currently there are already some companies that are busy working on an implementation for retrofitting. The heart of this is a completely normal diesel engine whose ignition system, injection system and piston geometry are converted to the gasoline engine principle. Because the hydrogen has to be "ignited" during such a conversion so that it can burn in the combustion chamber. It will be interesting to see where the journey is going.
