Surely you have ever wondered why some rally cars have a small air scoop on the roof, a so-called Roof scoop, Among other things, this method is used to ventilate the interior, but that is not the main reason, otherwise any racing car used in circuit racing would have an air scoop on the roof, so that the driver wearing a helmet would be optimally equipped with cooling air and Oxygen is supplied. The real reason why rally vehicles wear a roof scoop is that the air pressure in the interior is slightly increased, which means that much less dust and sand from the rally route into the interior.
Any type of sand and dust would massively affect the driver's view of the track, and it would also be much more difficult for the passenger to read out exact route details. In addition, the roof air scoop prevents dust and sand from entering the sensitive electronic and mechanical systems inside the vehicle. In street cars, it is in addition to the ventilation, just the look, which is why tuning friends attach a Roof-Scoop to their car.
Advantages of a roof scoop:
- With such a scoop on the roof, the vehicle looks much cooler.
- The ventilation in the interior improves a little.
- A Roof-Scoop is a very inexpensive tuning option and fits all vehicles.
Disadvantages of a roof scoop:
- An air scoop on the roof may increase fuel consumption.
- Impairments in aerodynamics can not be ruled out.
- Due to the very individual tuning, the resale value of the vehicle is questionable.
If you're thinking of putting a roof scoop on your car's roof, then you should weigh those pros and cons and think about whether this tuning option makes sense for your project.
