More space in the pickup with a loading area extension

A loading area extension for the pickup usually means an extension of the loading area to the rear. The tailgate is folded down and used as an additional cargo area and secured the cargo in another way. This sometimes brings up to 50 cm extended loading area if the load should not protrude the pickup. Of course, the open tailgate also allows loading beyond the length of the loading area.

What is the purpose of a loading area extension?

the possibilities are numerous

A pickup truck already offers a fairly large cargo area, which in most cases is quite sufficient. Anyone who has more cargo than can be accommodated on the existing surface can use a trailer or even drive 2 x. However, if you often carry something that is only a little bit longer than your cargo area, a loading space extension could pay off for you. A very typical example of this is the transport of motorcycles or quads to the racetrack or their take on vacation. On the extended cargo area but also oversized packages, building material or tent poles can be transported.

What solutions are there?

Normally, the tailgate is converted to the extension piece of the loading area. But you can not just leave it open because it serves to protect your load from slipping. If you extend your cargo area through the tailgate, you must therefore secure the cargo through a cargo bed basket or a tailgate net. The more common solution is the cargo area basket, because it is more stable and brings a larger extension. It can be mounted in such a way that if you are not using the loading area extension, it can be folded inwards on the loading area. Then you can fold up the tailgate again, but have significantly less loading space than you would have with a pickup without loading space extension, since the loading space basket takes you quite a lot of space.

The tailgate net, in contrast, has the disadvantage that it has to be mounted and tensioned on both sides, thus providing only little more space than the folded-up tailgate. On the other hand, the tailgate net can also be easily remounted and used as a cargo bed divider if you want to save a shorter load from slipping on the truck bed. A retractable loading area is not a loading area extension in the true sense. It is extended during the loading activity and makes loading easier. However, you can not drive away with the cargo bed extended and therefore can not accommodate any additional cargo behind it.

Disadvantages and risks

If you decide for a loading space extension, you should not overlook the fact that the protruding cargo and also the folded down tailgate the view on your number plate must not prevent. Your car is now over the height of your taillights, which must be made clearly visible to avoid rear-end collisions. Also, when parking, reversing and in tight corners you have to take into account the increased length to neither damage your own car, nor that of another. Especially in urban areas, where parking spaces are difficult to find anyway, it may be better to do without the loading space extension.

it should not be a permanent state
