An alternative to gilding? Brass parts!

The refinement of metal is not uncommon in the tuning area. Metals can be refined in various ways and thus made more durable in order to be better protected against corrosion or other environmental influences. The refinement also makes metals more robust and resistant. Brassing is one way of finishing. In brassing, metal is coated with a layer of brass. How the brass works and whether it makes sense in tuning is explained in more detail below.

Brassing - different methods

There are different ways to coat a metal with brass. Iron can be coated with molten brass if it is made red to the glowing color. The process takes place in the absence of air. Another known method of obtaining a brass coating is this galvanic Method. In this process, a cyanide bath with zinc sulfate and copper sulfate is produced. The brass coating is created by the cathodic deposition of Zinc and Copper as an alloy. The cyanide bath is still slightly Gold(III) chloride added, then a gold-colored coating is formed. In addition to iron and other metals, copper can also be coated with brass. To do this, the copper must first be pickled brightly. The copper treated in this way is brought into zinc amalgam and mixed with hydrochloric acid (diluted) and tartar. In order to obtain the desired chemical reaction, the composition mentioned must be boiled. As a result, the copper turns white and has to be washed. In order to remove the mercury formed during the reaction, the washed copper must be heated. A subsequent polish reveals the shiny brass color. The process of brass brass is also called wrong gilding bezeichnet.

Brass - does it make sense in the tuning area?

Tuning forums now and then ask whether it makes sense to brass rims. Opinions differ and not every supplier of galvanic finishing processes carries out the brassing of rims. Furthermore, the metal parts to be refined have to be treated in advance in the galvanic brass. Rims would have to be sanded and polished. Not all materials are suitable for brassing. Whether a specialist company not only chrome or gold-plated, but also offers brass, that should be specifically requested. In tuning forums, it is also considered that brass can tarnish and then no longer looks nice. It is advisable to weigh up the pros and cons of such a refinement and to ask specialist retailers about existing refinement options. Depending on the price and the desired tuning look, it may make more sense to have the rims gold-plated or to choose a different finish.

Gold plating is only slightly more expensive

Of course a matter of taste

And finally ... Brassing is one way to get a shiny color towards gold. The methods for covering metal objects with brass are varied and depend on the metal. How sensible the brass is in the automotive sector depends on the desired optics and the area of application as well as the component. Gilding is an alternative.
