Hot thing - refuel the vehicle with nitromethane!

[Update: 28.09.2023] This post was updatedto take more recent information into account. Driving a car using only nitromethane is not recommended. Nitromethane is not unknown as a fuel. Nitromethane is still used today, namely in racing. And ultimately, nitromethane is also used as fuel in RC model making. The special thing about this fuel is that it significantly improves engine performance. The nitromethane results in a significant increase in engine performance, which is why the fuel is also used in racing. The second property of nitromethane is engine cooling.

There are differences depending on the use

Depending on the use of nitromethane, this is not used as a pure fuel. Rather, it is a mixture that is used in racing. Here the mixture ratio consists of approx. 85 percent nitromethane and 15 percent Methanol. The question certainly arises as to why such fuel cannot be used in normal use in a car engine. The answer to this is simple. Because the engine cannot use the nitromethane without damage. For example, there would be massive damage to the engine, such as the cylinders and the spark plugs. That's why nitromethane is not used as a normal fuel.

Nitromethane in a normal engine

If you were to consider using nitromethane in a normal car, you would have to make extensive changes. In addition to its cooling properties for the engine, nitromethane burns much hotter. A normal engine in a car is not designed for such hotter combustion. The damage already described would then quickly occur. A renovation would require a lot of work. Like a revision regarding the spark, the fuel lines, the tank and actually everything that is connected to nitromethane.

This also applies to them injection or carburettor. In addition to this work, you would also have to get approval for the use of nitromethane. Such a change is negligible for racing cars, as they do not require road approval. However, due to the changes in a normal car, but also due to the fuel, a new inspection by a testing organization is required. Whether you get one seems rather questionable or is to some extent impossible. Anyone seriously considering such an idea should consult an expert and a tuning workshop beforehand.

An Overview of Nitromethane

nitromethane is a chemical compound that plays an important role in motorsports primarily due to its properties as an oxygen carrier. The special property significantly improves the running behavior of engines, which is why it is also used in the scene Nitro fuel referred to as. Nitromethane creates a significant increase in performance, which is particularly valued in certain motorsport disciplines. However, the use of nitromethane is not without danger. It is a highly flammable substance and can cause fire in the event of a fire irritant or toxic fumes arise. The Steam/air mixtures of nitromethane are explosive and contact with incompatible substances poses a serious risk of fire and explosion.

Legal and practical aspects of nitromethane

Because of the dangers and potential for abuse, some jurisdictions have regulated the use of nitromethane. For example, from February 1, 2022, the possession of nitro fuel with a nitro content over 16% prohibited, forcing owners to use up their gas by that date. The penalties for possessing fuel containing over 16% nitro can be significant. The cost of nitromethane can also be quite high, with 1 liter currently selling for almost EUR 70. Nitromethane enables one significant increase in performance of engines with only minor modifications required to the vehicle. Nitro injection can increase engine performance for a short time at about 20 to 50 percent raise.

The shelf life of nitro fuel is another factor that should be considered. It is generally recommended to use nitro fuel within 12 Monaten to consume, although some have also reported using nitro fuel that is up to 2 years old. Nitromethane remains a popular choice for motorsports enthusiasts, however Model building hobbyists, who are looking for a way to significantly increase the performance of the engines. However, it is important to be aware of the risks.

  1. You won't get street legal anyway because of the exorbitant NOx emissions with that stuff. In my opinion, that's right, you don't have to pollute our planet with proven harmful gases, come hell or high water.
Take a look at a combustion reaction equation and you will see what I mean.
