Never again cold start? With an oil / cooling water preheater!

Anyone who not only "drives" their car, but is familiar with the technology and perhaps even optimizes this technology through tuning, will know the feeling. Every cold start hurts! The loving car owner who has to torture his poor car. The engine that rubs its innards in the first few seconds, until the viscous cold oil has finally reached everywhere. The poor neighbor, who breaks the particularly hard nailing of the cold diesel engine. And not least the environment, because at cold start the pollutant emissions due to the raised idle speed and the not yet operational catalyst is significantly higher. Every cold start also wears out the engine like 10 km, they say. Whether that's true, be put there, but that it is not good for the engine, that is immediately obvious to any layman.

Cold start - what to do about negative consequences?

So what helps? In addition to the Parking heaters, which can also co-heat the cooling water circuit (rather rare to find), there are also so-called in the market preheating, which mainly focus on oil and cooling water. Here, with the help of heating mats or heating rods, the oil or the cooling water brought to a temperature that can start the engine warm, so without the many negative consequences mentioned above. The mats are mounted, for example, on the oil pan, where is known to be the majority of the engine oil. In addition to the oil, of course, the engine block itself heated with, because the metals from which such a block is (aluminum or cast iron) conduct the heat naturally very well.

The cooling water is heated as well

Additional mats or rods on the radiator itself would also be able to bring the entire amount of cooling water to temperature, so that the heating for the interior of the first engine rotation works on. These heaters have in common that they all work with electricity. Caring for them through the car battery is certainly not a good idea, because longer-term functioning idea, so must serve the domestic socket. This greatly limits the scope of use of such external heat sources, because not everywhere you have a usable outlet available. And the environmental aspect also suffers massively from electricity from fossil fuels, with green electricity, of course, the whole thing looks different.

The bottom line is that such heating options for the engine make perfect sense, they help to massively reduce wear and tear and increase comfort and safety. These solutions are primarily conceivable in northern countries, where the winter is still really hard and consistently frosty, but the heating mats can also make sense for the owner of an automotive darling who wants to protect his forged pistons from the rigors of a cold start. Further options are of course the classic ones Stationary heating system or so-called Engine heater for connection to a socket (Video below).

Cranken - The expensive alternative

If there are no mats available, the following trick also helps a little: Before starting, pull the vehicle fuse for the fuel pump and start the engine. It will not start, only turned by the starter. This also creates oil pressure and the (cold) oil is distributed throughout the engine. Do not release the ignition key until the oil pressure lamp goes out, then insert the fuse and restart the engine. Audi calls the whole thing “Cranken” (for “turning the crankshaft”) and works with this method in the DTM, among others.
