Duty to see - the reflector on the car is mandatory!

You want to attach other reflectors / reflectors to your car? For example, you have bought a reflector foil and want to enhance your car visually? Then you should know the legal situation before attaching reflectors, reflectors or so-called reflector films. Reflectors are only allowed for certain vehicles. The EU standard ECE 48 provides information on the installation of lighting equipment. What that means for private vehicles is explained below.

Reflectors in the trade

Duty to see - the reflector on the car is mandatory!

You can find a large number of reflector offers on the internet. There are reflector films, self-adhesive cat's eyes, reflective stars and many other items for the car. The articles are partly from abroad and should encourage the buyer to buy through a positive advertisement and product description. If you intend to tune your car, then you should not immediately put on reflective elements or even buy reflector films. Below we explain why reflective materials on the car can cause problems, fines and even loss of registration.

Reflective strips - reflectors

Reflectors and reflector films are also referred to as reflective markers. A reflector foil may not be fitted to M48 passenger cars, which are equipped with four wheels and have up to eight seats, in accordance with EU standard ECE 1. The EU standard also applies to private vehicles. You must therefore attach to your car no reflective films, not even in individual stripes or in other combined forms. Cat eyes, reflectors, reflectors, warning markers and reflector foils are, in case of doubt, not allowed on the car. If you are not sure what is allowed in the tuning and what can lead to fines or a loss of registration, then you should consult with experts from the tuning area.

black taillights attach - what should you watch out for?

Duty to see - the reflector on the car is mandatory!
everything black - not allowed

You want to attach black taillights to your vehicle? Have you ever seen cars with black taillights and red reflective elements? The installation of black taillights is no problem for tuners and the vehicle can get a street legal, when red reflectors on the taillights or at another suitable location on the rear of the vehicle (eg in the rear apron) are mounted. Without these reflectors, road traffic is not permitted. The rear of a car must be visible in the dark (reflecting) when no lighting is activated. When buying black taillights, you should ask in a tuning workshop for the red reflectors and learn what is allowed when changing the taillights and what leads to the loss of registration for road traffic.

And finally ... Reflector films are commercially available in many designs. Reflecting elements such as cat's eyes, stars and other interesting shapes can also be purchased on the internet. However, the gluing of the car with any reflector film for private motor vehicles is not allowed anywhere. Only the taillights, if they are replaced and do not contain any reflective elements, may be equipped with red reflectors. For legal advice an experienced tuning workshop or TÜV / Dekra / KÜS should be consulted.

  1. First, cool site!
But then the question remains whether I can remove the standard reflectors if I have normal/red taillights.
    Regards

  2. I would like to add a red reflective foil to the recessed rear light number plate field on my SARIS trailer in the area between the rear lights and the number plate. In addition, attach two license plate lights closer to the license plate, as the original lighting (Multipoint II) is very poor.
