Conversion options: shift linkage to shift cables!

One possible modification to a vehicle with a manual transmission is the conversion from the classic gearshift linkage to one Cable control (Shift cable). The difference between the two is that the shift linkage is made of two fixed rods and the shift cables consist of two Steel cables. In both variations, one end of the rods / ropes hangs from the underside of the gear lever and the other end leads to the gearbox. There, depending on the position of the gear lever, the gears are selected by moving the ropes / rods.

Why remodel and what should you pay attention to?

The reason for the conversion is that the shift linkages are rigid and slow down the shifting process due to the limited freedom of movement. Above all, however, transmissions can be made with shift cables more precise switch. This is because the clearance between the recordings of the transmission and the shift linkage changes with use. This happens more slowly with shift cables because they are not rigid and therefore have more leeway.

Another reason is that in many old vehicles the spare parts are rare or expensive (or both) and there is also the possibility of retrofitting the cable gears of newer vehicles. First of all, however, you should research whether there is already one for the vehicle you want Conversion kit or instructions gives. A conversion kit usually only contains one adapter plate, a Carrier for oxygen bottles or new ones joints. Shift cables with shift lever often have to be bought additionally. It is important that the conversion kit is intended for the "new" gearshift cables and for the intended vehicle.

If no “ready-made” conversion kit or instructions are available, the required adapters must be made by yourself. In some vehicles, however, the steps mentioned are not necessary at all, since it is possible that only the two rods can be replaced by steel cables with a suitable holder at both ends. It is important that the length of the ropes match the length of the poles matchesto keep it working properly.

How will the renovation be carried out? What to watch out for?

If the linkage, including the shift lever and mount, has to be replaced, this must be done first expanded become. In most cases, the shift gate and the center console as well as the mount for the shift lever on the vehicle and gearbox must be removed. After that, possible Adapter plates and brackets must be installed before the new shift cables with mount for the shift lever can be installed. In vehicles with rear-wheel drive, it may be necessary to remove the transmission in order to access the screw connection of the shift linkage. As already mentioned, in some vehicles it is sufficient if only the rods are removed and measured and then shift cables of the same length and joint mounts be replaced.

  1. Hallo,
I would like to retrofit my old camper, Bj 1993 Fiat Ducato 290, with a cable shifter.
Is there a retrofit kit for this? Or can I use the ones from newer models.
Someone already did, but didn't answer me.
    Thanks for any answer
    Heinz Brown
