Eye-catcher for tuning fans: Spinner Caps hubcap

Spinner Caps are very special hub caps or hub covers / wheel hub caps for cars or motorcycles. They come in different designs and are mounted on the wheel hub, which is exactly in the middle of the wheel. The special thing about them is that they not rotate with the wheel, but are mounted in such a way that they can either rotate freely or are stationary. In the latter case, the hub cap stays in the same position even when the wheel rotates. The Rolls-Royce Phantom has this gimmick ex works, but the small accessory can also be found in the stock of BMW M Performance.

Why Spinner Caps?

In autotuning, we like to borrow words from English because it sounds cool and international. But we don't always borrow the exact right word. If you google spinner caps with the language setting as English, you will get results that lead you to a small toy that you can spin in your hand. The spinner caps are the discs in the middle around which the toy spins. At first glance this seems to have little to do with your car, but on closer inspection it is very accurate. Spinner is derived from the word to spin. Caps means caps.

Tip: how you can remove the old hub caps from the wheel without dismantling it HERE explained.

Just like the toy, the car wheel spins fast while the fixed hub cap is a cap that stands still in the middle and at the same time protects the wheel hub from dirt. It is precisely this standing still that makes Spinner Caps so popular with us. You have probably already noticed that all the patterns and spots on a wheel are optically distorted into stripes when you turn it quickly. This can be desired for rims, for example. However, if you have a logo or writing on your bike, you may want it to remain visible. You can achieve this with a fixed hub cap. Spinner caps are primarily used to mount and advertise brand logos and emblems on car wheels.

What you often find when searching for spinner caps on English autotuning websites are so-called Spinner Wheels. To complete the confusion, these are called Spinning Wheels in German. They spin freely, so they are independent of the wheel itself. When your car stops and the wheel stops spinning, a spinning wheel keeps spinning. This looks very cool, but according to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations it is forbidden. This doesn't mean that you can't buy and mount them on your car, but you can no longer drive this car on public roads in Germany.

Spinner Caps for your car

You can also occasionally buy spinner caps from normal car accessory shops. They look attractive and are not expensive either. At the moment, however, they are limited to the Rolls-Royce and BMW brands. So far we have not been able to find universal spinner caps for the wheel hub in a German online shop. If you do find some, then you have to make sure that you install them well and correctly, as a part that suddenly detaches from the bike while riding can easily cause an accident. If in doubt, have them fitted by your professional car tuner.
