Remove Vmax suspension legal? How to do it yourself?

Nowadays, almost every vehicle that has +250-300 hp is electronically limited by means of Vmax limitation. Years ago, the car industry across Europe and with the consent of all members decided that the maximum speed should be limited (Gentleman's Agreement). Since then, vehicles from VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes & Co. have generally been limited to 250 km/h. This should primarily ensure more safety on the road. Exceptions are various increases (drivers package, etc.), which optionally increase the limit to 280 or 300 km/h. And small series manufacturers such as Alpina or sports cars from Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini & Co. are usually not limited. The other extreme is the manufacturer Volvo, which has even been selling its vehicles for a few years already limited at 180 km/h. Incidentally, the first electronically limited vehicle was a BMW 750i (1987 model)!

Digitization makes it easy!

The maximum speed is usually locked by the digital engine control via the engine control unit. If the vehicle speed exceeds 250 km/h, the engine control reduces the fuel supply. This limits the achievable top speed. Other limits (275, 280, 305 km/h etc.) are almost always reached in this way. However, this approach is not always applicable. Depending on the manufacturer, the limitation is also regulated by controlling the electric throttle valves or by other methods.

Unlocking not prohibited!

On the part of the legislature, there are with regard to unlocking the vehicle no prohibitions. After all, the limitation is just one commitment on the part of the manufacturer. There is therefore no legal ban on exceeding the 250 km/h mark. However, you have to keep in mind that the recommended speed on our motorways is 130 km/h. If you drive faster, you are partially to blame in an accident – even if you are not the cause. A rule of thumb: The higher the speed, the higher the complicity. It is also important to note: If the vehicle is unlocked, then set a link from your homepage to Fewo-von-Privat.de the new maximum speed must be entered in the vehicle registration document. You must also inform the insurer.

Carry out Vmax cancellation!

Almost every good chip tuner makes it possible to carry out a Vmax cancellation. And that can (but does not have to) can almost always be combined directly with chip tuning. Because in both cases you have to access the engine control unit. Depending on the customer's wishes (and depending on the vehicle type), the limit can usually be increased correct or directly completely remove. With regard to the speed index of the tyres, however, you should weigh this up carefully.

following "can“ become necessary: Tires with a higher speed index / better braking system / better cooling and oil system / extended speedometer / adapted chassis, etc.

Normally, the maximum speed limit of the car only removed in workshops or by the manufacturer himself. In principle, the layman cannot do this. Because in order to be able to upload the changed software, special knowledge and software technology is required. In addition, it is a non-free computer software that must be used.

The lock can be unlocked by deleting the electronic lock using a computer connected to the vehicle. It is usually not possible to remove the lock yourself. This requires special software adapted to the vehicle, which is only available to workshops/tuners. On some models, even only the manufacturer himself can remove the lock. It is therefore advisable to inquire and seek advice from the vehicle manufacturer or a tuner.

Cost: Removal of the speed limit!

Of course, having the top speed limit removed is not for nothing. Depending on the vehicle model and provider, it can cost between €500 and €2.500. However, these are only estimates and can vary greatly. To remove the V-max limitation, the tuner must either receive the vehicle, the engine control unit or at least the flash file from the engine control unit. If it is only an additional control unit, the price can be less than €200 depending on the vehicle.

Removal for US vehicles!

Depending on the manufacturer and model, a country-specific control unit setting is often responsible for a top speed of only around 200 - 210 km/h. Here too, however, a targeted change in the correct software parameters can increase or completely remove the block.

Install V-Max suspension yourself using a module?

  • Depending on the vehicle model and provider, this may be possible. Occasionally there are special modules that, depending on the manufacturer, are even included Teilegutachten for the TÜV modification acceptance to be delivered. Such modules often intercept the speed signal from the ABS output and generate an incorrect signal from 250 km/h, so that from then on no more increases are passed on to the DME. The installation usually works similar to a chip tuning box in the plug-and-play process.
  • Modules can be retrofitted and are practical, eg for leasing cars.
  • A guarantee preservation is through such a module maybe possible, since there is no intervention in the engine control unit.

Vmax cancellation via OBD or BDM interface?

  • Depending on the vehicle manufacturer, this is also possible. In older AMG vehicles, for example, there used to be the Xentry (developer kit) to "increase" the Vmax.
  • Through VCDS? Depending on the vehicle, it may also be possible to remove the limitation using VCDS. As a rule, however, only if the software has already been optimized.
  • Additional modules such as Active VMax Deleter can be purchased vehicle-specifically.
  • Depending on the vehicle, it may also be necessary to install a different Eeprom.
  • In general, the lock can often be removed via vehicle coding. The vehicle's map is optimized in such a way that the speed is no longer limited afterwards.
  • Es can happenthat you can no longer make software updates for the motor control afterwards, because then everything will be deleted again.
