The V-belt squeaks? You can do that!

Occurs the striking V-belt squeaking when starting or accelerating the vehicle, then there is a need for action. In the following article you will learn more about the causes of the squeaky V-belt and what you can do about it.

CAUSE - SQUEAKING DRIVE BELT

How does the V-belt work?

  • The V-belt in your car transmits the rotary motion of the engine to the ancillary units such as the generator (alternator), the fan, the water pump or the air conditioning compressor. The belt serves as a drive belt stretched over several V-belt pulleys. If the motor drive rotates, the aggregates also move. In this way, the V-belt ensures that the engine functions optimally.

The principle of friction!

  • The functional principle of the V-belt is based on friction, so it is always exposed to a wear process. Since the V-belt consists mainly of rubber, it also loses the plasticizer over the years and becomes porous.

Squeaking noises are common in winter!

  • Especially in the cold season, a defective V-belt can no longer fully transmit the power and the speeds of the elements in frictional contact with each other deviate, the so-called "slip". This means that the V-belt wheel runs faster than the belt lying on it, which leads to the typical squeaking noises.

Go to a workshop?

  • If the V-belt heats up as a result of the movement, the squeaking usually stops after a short time, since the heat from the engine evaporates the moisture and the traction improves as a result. Still you should as soon as possible Visit a workshop to have the V-belt replaced.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT A SQUEAKING V-BELT

Adhere to exchange intervals!

  • The vehicle's owner's manual specifies the prescribed intervals for changing the V-belt. Normally, the tension of the V-belt is checked during the regular service of your vehicle. However, a change is required after 8 years at the latest or when the mileage has been between 75.000 and 125.000 kilometers.

Do not replace V-belts yourself!

  • You should see the fan belt never replace it yourself. Have the V-belt changed in a workshop, as this is not easy to do, even for experienced hobby mechanics. If you make a mistake during installation, this can lead to major damage and expensive consequences.

The costs of changing the V-belt!

  • If you change it in a workshop, you have to reckon with costs of between 150 and 250 euros. But sometimes it is sufficient to simply remove the V-belt with a special tool tighten to permit. Of course, this costs less than the complete replacement.

The benefits of V-belt sprays!

  • In the short term too special sprays help. A V-belt spray will apply in a thin layer while the engine is running on the strap sprayed on, which eliminates the noise for some time.

The following note is essential: For safety reasons, tuningblog recommends all repair, inspection and maintenance work exclusively to be carried out in a specialist workshop! Of course, that wasn't the end of it!

In this tuningblog category there are guides and instructions for common defects/repairs on the vehicle and for installing accessories/tuning parts. Our articles explain in a simple way common defects and the corresponding repairs and they also explain how the first signs of a defect become noticeable. In most cases, we also have initial clues to the repair instructions in our repair instructions approximate costs listed. The goal of ourAuto Repair Guide“ is to create a head start in knowledge for the next visit to the workshop with initial tips. This may save you from tedious troubleshooting and you may even be able to do small things yourself. The same applies, of course, to the installation of accessories/tuning parts. Here, too, we would like to help with the implementation with instructions and tips. There are many other posts on this as well.
