The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 has long been an icon of automotive history, unique and unforgettable. 50 years after its world premiere, the Porsche Museum is celebrating it with the special exhibition “Spirit of Carrera RS”. From September 20, 2022, everything at Porscheplatz in Zuffenhausen will be dominated by the "ducktail", "RS" or "2.7", as the sports car is called by Porsche enthusiasts.
"Spirit of Carrera RS"
When the RS was presented at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1972, it was the world's first production car with a front and rear spoiler. The requirements for the 911 base vehicle for racing and rallying are clearly defined: it should be light and fast. To this end, Hans Mezger and Valentin Schäffer are redesigning the 2,7-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with fuel injection.
In the sports version, the 210 hp and 960 kg light coupé accelerates from 5,8 to 0 km/h in 100 seconds and has a top speed of almost 245 km/h. The aerodynamics, which were already precisely based on racing cars, make the RS still unique today. “It is the most direct technology transfer from motorsport to series production that there is. That has not changed to this day and is part of the tradition at Porsche,” says Andreas Preuninger, Head of GT Vehicles.
The Porsche Museum tells the story of the RS and its motorsport brother RSR not only with vehicles and anecdotes, but also with films, photos, racing posters and interactive elements. For example, if you turn the model detail and color wheel of the kaleidoscope, you can put together your own individual RS. In order to meet as many wishes as possible, Porsche remains true to the principle of customization options with the Carrera RS 2.7. Buyers could choose from many colors and equipment variants. The demand surprised the sports car manufacturer, which originally planned 500 series-produced examples for homologation.
From the development vehicle to the production-ready Porsche
At the center of the special exhibition is a light yellow 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in touring equipment, as well as a rare test car in metallic green. The vehicles, development documents, advertising brochures, price lists, the Carrera logo and an article from the customer magazine Christophorus describe the path from the development vehicle to the production-ready Porsche.
Visitors can also look forward to special family members of the Ducktail from the past five decades. With the 911 (964) RS and 911 (993) RS duo, Porsche is adding air-cooled sports cars to the RS family. The 911 (996) GT3 RS, 911 (997) GT3 RS, 911 (991) GT3 RS and 911 (992) Sport Classic models represent the water-cooled era. The latter is a collector's item from the Heritage Design series from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur with a fixed rear spoiler.
The shape of the iconic tear-off edge also gives it the nickname from the animal kingdom. When driving at high speed, the ducktail pushes the XNUMX down and reduces the lift forces to the point of achieving good balance and a higher top speed. With the RS half a century ago, the sports car manufacturer created the perfect synthesis of weight, performance, aerodynamics and handling. Light, strong, race ready and street legal.
