Led stripes for lighting the headlights? Illegal!

Due to an unusually large number of inquiries in recent weeks about LED strips for headlights (for example from the provider SilverHolder or Amber) we have decided to inform you about the topic. We ourselves are currently seeing more and more ads on social media platforms showing the unusual additional lighting on vehicles on the road. And you could actually get to the topic right away with a reference to our contribution to the impermissible headlight tuning to lock! The requirements of Paragraphs 49a to 54, 60 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) apply. Basically there are changes to the lighting equipment . And that doesn't just apply to changes IM Headlight housing but also outside. While driving, active LED strips on the headlight or in any gap in the vehicle (Tailgate, bonnet, door etc.) are "while driving" not allowed.

Providers keep silent about illegality!

It might be quite funny as a show effect at a tuning meeting, but definitely an absolute no-go on the road. And if the glued-on stripes cover a significant part of the headlight when it is switched off, that is also illegal. In the worst case, the operating license can be revoked and the closure lead on the spot. At least when the stripes cannot be removed directly without further ado.

Of course, this does not apply to LED strips, who have a permit

Even if such a flexible stripe as "LED DRL turn signal strip for headlights“ or something similar is declared, it may not be used on public roads. You should also think twice about connecting such a stripe, which can be purchased for less than €10, to the sometimes highly complex vehicle electronics of the car. Perhaps a nice gag as individual and additional ambient lighting, but by no means a good idea for the exterior of a street-legal vehicle!

In this country the stripes from the video are illegal!

  1. I am of the opinion that the LED strips that have an E number (E24) such as those from Dunlop (action.com/nl-be/p/dunlop-ledstrip-koplamp-en-knipperlicht) should actually be LEGAL, Or am I wrong?
