Pop Off valves - the turbo for your turbocharger

The turbocharger has been known for a long time in autotuning and it is now indispensable. While the tuning companies used to provide larger engines with more power by using a turbocharger, in the meantime they have also been installed in many small engines to handle more efficiently with less displacement. Here, the fresh intake air is passed through a turbine in a compressor and then the engine, or the cylinders, fed, whereby more oxygen arrives and thus more thrust is developed as without the turbo. Although this already works at low speeds, you still often notice a so-called turbo lag, which makes itself noticeable just when starting and after the gear change.

Due to the design - the turbo lag

Since the turbocharger is driven by the exhaust stream, and this greatly decreases when you take gas away (eg when switching), the turbine loses a lot of speed. Behind the compressor there is a high pressure, which can escape nowhere, since a check valve closes the tube. If the check valve opens, the turbine is slowed down and must first restart. This time between the adjustment moments is the turbo lag, what you suddenly feel and that often obscures the driving pleasure tremendously.

everything has grown into an herb

This is where the Pop Off valve or the diverter valve comes into play, which is now available in all well-known tuning shops. It redirects the excess air and thus prevents the overpressure that slows down the turbine. There is no fluctuation, the pressure is always the same and the turbo lag disappears. Since 2004, these valves are electrically controllable, in contrast to the previously used pneumatic variant, which was much more prone to error. In autotuning, these valves are available open or closed, with the open version simply discharging the excess air to the outside, while the closed version provides the air back to the turbocharger.
