# How long will the fuel last when the fuel gauge lights up red?

As soon as the fuel gauge red lights, you can usually still a few kilometers continue driving until the fuel is completely used up. But how many kilometers is it exactly? Whenever the fuel gauge suddenly lights up red, many drivers start to sweat right away. One of the reasons for this is that Fines (€) threaten if the vehicle comes to a standstill on the motorway without fuel. Depending on the model, the fuel displays are different. For very old cars there is still one petcock with reserve function, which must be switched over manually. In the case of newer vehicles, there is at least one fuel gauge. An analog pointer offers a guideline here. With a new model, the remaining kilometers are usually displayed digitally. If the displays are at zero, the reserve tank is still there approx. 5 liters of fuel is available for storage, management and analysis.

### A lot is possible with software

Attention: Through OBD dongle, VCDS & Co. there is also the possibility of the fuel gauge to be configured individually. Here you can set different values (108%, 110%, 115% etc.) and thus the fuel gauge to adjust. If this is the case, the reserve amount in the tank is of course reduced. In many vehicles, this can be carried out so far that when the fuel needle / range display in the on-board computer 0 km indicates that the tank is actually empty. There are also various secret functions that even make it possible exactly to display the amount of fuel still in the tank.

### The reserve lasts until the next gas station

The fuel reserve configured at the factory is usually sufficient for around 50 to a maximum of 100 kilometers. Of course, it depends on whether you drive a three-cylinder VW Polo or a Dodge V8, and above all AS one drives. Whether the reserve should be fully exhausted depends on the type of car and the driver's personal driving style. If you feel unsure, you can also work out your reserve level yourself.

### This is how the remaining fuel is calculated!

For the calculation it has to tank capacity be calculated. If the fuel gauge next time on zero stands, the car must be refueled. The liters filled can be deducted from the total capacity. The calculated value is divided by the average consumption of the vehicle. This allows you to calculate how many remaining kilometers / liter are available to you.
