The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) was introduced to reduce the risk of accidents. For car owners, this has obvious advantages, but also a few disadvantages. Because own screws are only partially possible with the new system. While the TÜV controls the TPMS comparatively laxly in recent years, since May 2018 has been paying more attention to the implementation. Anyone who has been driving in the workshop since then with a deactivated or defective TPMS must expect a "substantial deficiency".
TPMS for more security
The TÜV badge does not exist then. Even those who have not tried so far to install the system, gets the TÜV problems. Vehicles requiring TPMS must be retrofitted now. Necessarily, because in curves and in the wet, a bad tire pressure can cost the famous second too much. The reduced pressure increases the rolling resistance, increases fuel consumption and also ensures increased rubber wear. The TPMS duty to counteract this.
If you have not yet installed the automatic tire pressure measuring system, it is advisable to visit the specialist workshop. Installation is quick, but relatively expensive. However, just because of the extra security should no longer be maintained with the installation - even if the disadvantages.
From winter to summer tires - only with technical help
Because TPMS is closely interlinked with the vehicle technology, the tire change must be carried out in the specialist workshop. The sensors must also be serviced each time they are changed. If they stop working, an exchange is required. Anyone who lends a hand risks damaging the sensitive sensors. However, this only applies to vehicles with direct TPMS. If you drive a car equipped with indirect TPMS, you can still access the jack and cross slot yourself. When changing the wheels, however, the control system must be updated. The manual of the vehicle contains the necessary information.
Tip: This is how the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is reset!
First of all, it is important to know which type of TPMS is installed. Among other things, the direct system offers functions such as the indication of tire pressure directly via the system. It has to be maintained every time the tire changes and can be used for about four to six years - then the sensors need to be replaced. Replacing only the batteries is not possible. The indirect TPMS must be updated after each change in tire pressure. Even after the installation of new tires an update is required. The instruction manual of the vehicle shows how you can do it yourself. The vehicle manual also clarifies which variant is installed. Tip: It is important to pay attention to this when a tire change is due for a tire with TPMS.
