The ultimate classic from Maranello, the Ferrari F40 was the first production Ferrari to top 200 mph (322 km/h). The legend essentially laid the foundation for an era of street-legal supercars long before it became a trend. But unlike many other Ferrari collectibles, like the 288 GTO, the F40 didn't come with a V12 from the factory. But a special example from the UK changes that.
Ferrari F40 with V12
In the early 2000s, Simpson Motorsport of an F40 chassis that was originally used for crash testing at the Maranello factory. Simpson Motorsport, known for preparing and maintaining a 348 LM for racing driver Stefano Sebastiani in the 1990s, was able to purchase the remains of the F40 thanks to the unique connection.
now with 5,5-litre V12 engine
Instead of rebuilding the F40 in its original configuration, Simpson and Sebastiani decided to go for a one-off project. The 2,9-liter V8 BiTurbo stayed out and a 5,5-liter V12 from a Ferrari 550 moved into the rear. The crazy decision resulted in a one-off that is completely different in terms of both performance and sound. It is also a little more powerful, with 485 hp compared to the 478 hp of the series.
The V12 was mated to a Hewland transaxle and the Italian was given F40 GTE-style bodywork and a full FIA-certified roll cage. The finished car competed in several events in the UK and Europe, taking second place in the 2006 Britcar race at Oulton Park and sixth places in races at Snetterton and Brands Hatch.
the unique piece will be auctioned
After the racing successes, the F40 was stored for a long time until Simpson Motorsport recently refurbished it and tested it extensively. Now the special F40 is being driven by Iconic Auctioneers for sale. In addition to the special powertrain, the target selling price of £500-600.000 (approx. €595.000-714.000) is sure to attract attention. However, that's a bargain compared to what a standard F40 in good condition costs.
