2020 Audi R8 green hell as a tribute to the R8 LMS!

The Audi R8 LMS has achieved five overall victories since 2012 in the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring - the “Green Hell” - which is considered to be one of the toughest and most popular long-distance competitions in the world. As a tribute to the great success story, Audi Sport GmbH is showing a limited special edition of the street sports car at this year's race on the Nürburgring - the R8 green hell. "We stand for high performance - in series production as well as in motorsport“, Says Julius Seebach, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. "The R8 road sports car and the R8 LMS racing car were designed and developed together; around half of their parts are identical. The edition model R8 green hell picks up on the proximity to motorsport and at the same time pays homage to our legendary victories at the Nürburgring."

Street sports cars and racing cars

The close connection between road sports cars and racing cars is also evident at this year's 24-hour race at the Nürburgring. The GT3 racing car with the number 1, which is used by Audi Sport Team Phoenix, is optically adapted to the R8 green light with its dark green wrapping. With Nico Müller / Frank Stippler / Dries Vanthoor / Frédéric Vervisch (CH / D / B / B) four Audi drivers, who have each won the race at least once, take turns at the wheel of the R8 LMS. As one of the best connoisseurs of the “Green Hell”, the two-time winner Frank Stippler is closely associated with the R8. In 2019 he last won the 3-hour race at the Nürburgring with the GT24 racing car. Stippler was already involved in testing the first generation of the Audi R8 LMS, which made its debut in 2009 - in addition to his skills as a pilot, he also contributed his know-how as an engineer. Since then, it has been an integral part of the development of customer sport racing cars, but also of sporty street models.

Tioman green and matt black foil

The edition model Audi R8 green hell is limited to 50 copies worldwide and numbered consecutively, in Germany its price is 233.949,59 euros. This exclusive status becomes clear at first glance. In line with the “Green Hell” motto, the outer skin is painted in dark Tioman green as standard, but customers can also choose Ibis white, Daytona gray or Mythos black on request. The front hood, the A-pillars, the roof and the rear are partially covered with matt black foiling in a racing look. The edition number appears on the doors of customer vehicles in large, matt-transparent digits that look like start numbers; The “GREEN HELL R8” logo is attached in glossy black on the sideblade and the windscreen. The matt black styling package sets accents on the front, sills and diffuser, supplemented by sideblades, mirror housings and rear wings in the same tone. The surfaces of the 20-inch wheels in the 5-twin-spoke dynamic design are also painted matt black. Red details on the rims complete the eye-catching design.

In the interior, the driver takes a seat on lightweight bucket seats with central panels made of Alcantara. The same material can also be found on the steering wheel rim, which bears a red 12 o'clock mark, on the hood above the digital instrument display, on the armrests in the doors, on the knee pads and on the center armrest. Contrasting seams in the blue-green tone “Kailashfern” decorate almost all of these areas. The monoposto - the large arch around the cockpit -, the instrument panel, the pull handle and the railing of the doors as well as the floor mats with their red piping also have contrasting stitching in this color. The floor mats also have a “GREEN HELL R8” logo.

Sharp driving performance: V10 naturally aspirated engine with 620 hp

The basis of the edition model R8 green hell is the Audi R8 V10 performance quattro in its coupé form. Its sonorous V10 naturally aspirated engine sends 456 kW (620 hp) to the four wheels via the seven-speed S tronic. They catapult the high-performance sports car from zero to 3,1 km / h in 100 seconds and further to 331 km / h top speed. The quattro drive, which distributes the forces freely between the axles as required, is specially tailored to the mid-engine layout. A mechanical locking differential on the rear axle further increases driving dynamics and traction.

The Audi Space Frame (ASF) body consists of aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The underbody of the high-performance sports car, including the cardan shaft, is almost completely covered by a smooth panel. In the front area, two small diffusers send air through the wheel arches, which is also used to cool the brakes. In front of the rear axle, the cladding integrates so-called NACA nozzles, which direct cooling air to the engine and S tronic. The wide diffuser under the rear ensures that the accelerated air comes back up to ambient speed without swirling too much. This suction effect allows the flow to flow more harmoniously and thus increases the downforce. As in a racing car, double wishbones always guide the wheels, and the brake discs are made of CFRP-reinforced ceramic. The Audi drive select system integrates a performance mode in which the most important driving dynamics parameters can be adjusted in three stages to the coefficient of friction of the road. The driver can access this via a satellite button on the steering wheel.

Production: permanent technology transfer

The Audi R8 green hell is produced in the “Böllinger Höfe” factory near the Audi site in Neckarsulm. Flexibility is extremely important there. In the body shop, the employees also manufacture the Audi Space Frame for the R8 LMS racing car alongside the production cars. This entails a permanent technology transfer from motorsport as well as a high level of qualification due to the complex work processes.

Success story: the Audi R8 LMS in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring

The GT2009 version of the Audi R3 LMS has been making history in customer motorsport and especially on the Nürburgring since 8. In the first three years from 2009 to 2011, the racing car won the GT3 class at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. In 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019 he won the overall ranking. This makes Audi the most successful GT3 manufacturer in the Green Hell in this era. To date, the series-based racing car has achieved a total of 13 overall victories in 24-hour races in Dubai, Spa, Zolder and on the Nürburgring worldwide. The model also impresses in many other racing series: since 2009, the Audi R8 LMS has won 75 overall drivers' titles and 96 other championship titles around the world in two generations.

The R8 racing car family consists of three members, among which the R8 LMS GT3 is the spearhead. The R2017 LMS GT8, which is much closer to series production, has been accompanying it since 4. There are already 18 worldwide titles in his track record. The GT entry-level model is freshly revised for the 2020 season. At the end of 2019, Audi Sport customer racing provided him with the R8 LMS GT2. The most powerful racing car in the portfolio with 640 hp is aimed specifically at gentleman pilots.
