City runabouts of the future - BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02

With the Concept CE 02, BMW Motorrad is presenting a new interpretation of smart, urban single-track mobility a week before the IAA Mobility 2021. The electric vehicle concept, which is neither a classic motorcycle nor a scooter, is a new and highly emotional mobility offer. “At first glance, you won't find much about the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 that is typical of BMW Motorrad. We want to strive for new things and be pioneers, as we have already proven with various projects in the past. The Concept CE 02 shows new proportions and modern forms of single-track mobility for the urban environment. In addition, we wanted to achieve a level of innovation in the design language that we haven't seen before. The uncomplicated use was important, but above all the emotional components and the driving pleasure, ”explains Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad.

BMW motorcycle concept CE 02

With its small dimensions and youthful proportions, it also clearly appeals to a new target group: people aged 16 and over who have not ridden a motorcycle before and are still open to new experiences, smart technology and, above all, mobility with fun. As a light e-vehicle weighing approx. 120 kg, the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 is ideal for urban use with a high degree of fun or uncomplicated commuting in style. 11 kW of power and full torque from standstill enable quick traffic light starts. A top speed of 90 km / h and a range of 90 km bring you easily from A to B - and back again, even in heavy city traffic.

The design shows a new facet of BMW Motorrad.

The entire appearance reveals the new character of the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 at first glance. "We wanted to develop an easily accessible two-wheeler for everyone who wants to be mobile and independent," explains Alexander Buckan, Head of Vehicle Design at BMW Motorrad. “The Concept CE 02 is the reliable companion in everyday life. You love it because it's always there and it just works - even if you're not so careful with it. And through stickers, tapes or other forms of customization, everyone should see that it belongs to them. It embodies youthful freedom and light-heartedness, almost like a skateboard on two wheels. "

The simple and clearly understandable proportions ensure an honest, emotional aesthetic. Two large-volume wheels, similar to a fun bike, promise robustness and uncomplicated driving pleasure. Their design as disc wheels underlines the graphic impression of the proportions. In between, the dark area for the two energy stores and the silver-colored accented drive create a compact body. The long, narrow bench and the frame complete the independent silhouette.

A new approach to BMW Motorrad.

Due to the flat vehicle structure, the center of gravity is low and the driving dynamics are favorable. At the same time, the large disc wheels and the low seat height make the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 inviting and inspire confidence. The new proportions not only allow a very agile driving experience, but they should also encourage non-motorcyclists to get on and try out.

The continuous bench shows the versatility of the concept. Regardless of whether you lean back and lean with your feet first or forwards and with your feet on the rear footrests or, of course, in pairs - the long bench allows you to sit in numerous positions, as no foot brake lever has to be operated thanks to the electric drive. In addition, the space between the bench and the frame offers space for small luggage. In the front area of ​​the bench, two criss-crossed, petrol-colored rubber bands are attached so that smaller utensils can be easily fixed there. The bracket, on which the front footrests are also mounted, offers additional storage space. You could also take your own skateboard with you and use it as a footrest.

High-quality details at second glance.

At second glance, the puristic design reveals high-quality details and technical finesse. Light is provided by a square, black headlight with four distinctive LED elements as the front headlights. The rear light is made up of two small, translucent LED leaves that are attached to the left and right of the rear bench. A small color display on the handlebar offers basic display functionality. A clearly visible, optically overdrawn cable harness leads to the display. The rest of the technology is deliberately designed with restraint. In combination with the disc wheels and the single-sided swing arm, the staged elements such as the drive belt, the handlebar and the fork underline the urban, modern character of the concept bike in detail.

The color concept focuses on the driver.

The color of the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 is also puristic: black / silver is the basic concept. The color black is reminiscent of early BMW motorcycles. What is new here, however, is the interplay of matt and high-gloss surfaces, which give the concept bike more expression. Silver-colored elements such as the fork bridge and the drive, the white graphics and the petrol-colored luggage belts set specific accents and loosen up the appearance. Technoid typography is used as an active design tool and conveys the association with technical information on machines. The BMW emblem is integrated on the whitish silicone seat just in front of the handlebar, otherwise only the BMW word mark on the rims and on the luggage belts refers to the manufacturer.

With this rather restrained color scheme, the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 offers the ideal stage for the rider and their individual character. Additional customization with stickers or tapes is conceivable and also desirable.

Fashionable statement - urban driver equipment for the young driver.

The new concept rider equipment is perfectly matched to the BMW Motorrad Concept CE 02 vehicle. Two jackets inspired by the zeitgeist show new possibilities for functional and fashionable clothing with innovative materials and processing techniques. Both variants continue the typographic approach of vehicle graphics. The casually cut jackets also underline the youthful fashion consciousness.

The playful use of transparency and thus the disclosure of the function as a design element make the product functional and at the same time fashionable everyday clothing. In this way, the two jackets deliberately set themselves apart from conventional driver equipment and are instead based on the current fashion trend.

Protection for printing.

With both driver equipment variants, the protection is part of the graphic statement. A newly developed technology (GRDXKN®) allows a protection function to be printed. The integrated, volume-forming material is abrasion-resistant and impact-absorbing. This creates a completely new interplay of graphics and structure in both outfits, which cleverly combines function and design.

With its slightly transparent windstop material, the women's jacket shows the neon-orange color of the honeycomb protection, golden reflex graphics and colorful color gradients create beautiful design structures. The 3D structure of the print comes into its own on the men's jacket. The petrol-colored details and the white graphics are in harmony with the color scheme of the concept bike and round off the overall picture. The production and manufacture of the driver's equipment could be realized together with almost exclusively regional experts and suppliers in Germany.
