Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

The new BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18: Nostalgic touring and confident cruising with historical roots. After the premiere of the new BMW R 18, BMW Motorrad is now introducing the second member of the new model series for the cruiser segment: the R 18 Classic. The new BMW R 18 Classic is a nostalgic tourer that cites the beginnings of the great touring cruiser. Compared to the very purist R 18, the R 18 Classic is characterized above all by the large windshield, pillion seat, saddlebags, LED auxiliary headlights and the 16-inch front wheel.

BMW R 18 Classic and BMW R 18

Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

The new BMW R 18 Classic and the BMW R 18 follow the tradition of historic BMW motorcycles. Technically as well as optically, they borrow from famous models such as the BMW R 5 and bring the essentials of the motorcycle back to the fore: puristic, no-frills technology and the boxer engine as the epicenter of driving pleasure, coupled with “good vibrations”. Classic design and clear but contemporary technology merge in the R 18 Classic and R 18 to form a fascinating overall concept that is characterized by a sophisticated and emotional driving experience.

Biggest BMW boxer engine of all time

Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

The most powerful BMW boxer engine of all time with plenty of torque. The heart of the new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 is a completely newly developed two-cylinder boxer engine, the "Big Boxer". Not only with its impressive appearance, but also in technical terms, it ties in with the traditional air-cooled boxer engines, which have provided an exciting driving experience for more than seven decades since BMW Motorrad production began in 1923. The two-cylinder boxer engine with the largest displacement ever used in motorcycle series production has a displacement of 1 802 cm3. The engine has an output of 67 kW (91 hp) at 4 rpm. From 750 to 1 rpm, more than 2 Nm of torque can be called up at any time, and natural pulling power goes hand in hand with a rich sound.

Double loop tubular frame made of steel

Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

Double loop tubular frame made of steel and rear wheel swing arm with enclosed axle drive in rigid frame look. The heart of the chassis of the new R 18 Classic and R 18 is a double-loop tubular frame made of steel. With its design, it ties in with the long BMW Motorrad tradition of this type of frame. The particularly high manufacturing quality and attention to detail is also evident in barely noticeable details such as the welded connections between steel pipes and cast or forged parts. Like the legendary BMW R 5, the rear wheel swing arm, manufactured according to a similar pattern, surrounds the rear axle drive in the right style using screw connections.

Telescopic fork with fork sleeves, cantilever strut, wire spoke wheels and disc brakes. The spring elements of the new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 deliberately do without electronic adjustment options. Rather, a telescopic fork and a directly hinged central spring strut with travel-dependent damping and adjustable spring preload ensure superior wheel control and appealing suspension comfort. As with the legendary BMW R 5, the stanchions of the telescopic fork are covered with fork sleeves. The standpipe diameter is 49 mm, the spring deflection at the front 120 and at the rear 90 mm. The new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 are decelerated by a double disc brake at the front and a single disc brake at the rear in conjunction with four-piston fixed calipers. The wire spoke wheels ensure a stylish appearance.

“Mid mounted footpeg” position of the footrests

Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

Consistent ergonomics for the best possible vehicle control. The new BMW R 18 Classic and R 18 rely on a casual, so-called “mid-mounted footpeg” position for the footrests, in keeping with BMW Motorrad. This classic position behind the cylinders is not only typical for BMW, but also enables a relaxed and active driving posture for the best possible vehicle control. Three driving modes as well as ASC and MSR for a high level of driving pleasure and safety as standard. Reversing aid and Hillstart Control as optional equipment ex works. To adapt to the individual wishes of the driver, the new R 18 Classic and R 18 also offer the three driving modes "Rain", "Roll" and "Rock" as standard and exceptional in this segment. The standard equipment also includes the Automatic Stability Control (ASC), which ensures a high level of driving safety. In addition, the new R 18 Classic and R 18 are equipped as standard with an engine drag torque control (MSR). In addition to other options, a reversing aid enables comfortable maneuvering and the Hill Start Control function enables easy hill start.

optionally with painting with double lining

The new R 18 Classic and R 18: Iconic style with a rigid frame look, modern technology and authentic materials presented in a new way. The R 18 Classic and R 18 skilfully transfer the iconic style of bygone times into the present day and in many details a puristic design lives on, which was mainly characterized by classics like the BMW R 5. Functional and style-defining elements such as the double loop frame, the drop tank, the open-running cardan shaft or the paintwork with double lining (optional equipment ex works) are not by chance reminiscent of the legendary Boxer from 1936. The classic body scopes of the R 18 Classic and R 18 also exist - as befits an authentic classic - made of metal. The chassis is an equally splendid reminiscence of the legendary R 5. Together with the two-arm swing arm and a suspension strut in a cantilever arrangement, it was possible to transfer the rigid frame concept of the R 5 optically perfectly into modern times.

exclusive look in lacquer and chrome

Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

The R 18 Classic First Edition and R 18 First Edition: Exclusive look in paintwork and chrome. At the time of its market launch, the new R 18 will be offered worldwide as an exclusive R 18 Classic First Edition and R 18 First Edition in addition to a standard model reserved for certain markets. It combines the R 18 look with exclusive equipment features in classic black paint with white double lining. In addition, the numerous surfaces in chrome, the seat badge and the “First Edition” chrome clasp on the side covers are among the highlights.

Conversion-friendly architecture as a prerequisite for simple customizing and optimal individualization. Like hardly any other motorcycle, the new R 18 Classic and R 18 offer a very conversion-friendly architecture, which was already the focus of the vehicle's basic design in the early conception phases. Accordingly, it has an easily removable rear frame and an easy-to-remove paint kit. Well thought-out interfaces for the hydraulic lines of the brake and clutch as well as the cable harness also allow the completely problem-free assembly of higher or lower control arms in connection with suitable hydraulic lines and cable harnesses. In addition, the visible valve covers (cylinder head covers) and the Heldenbrust (engine housing cover) are designed in such a way that they sit outside the oil chamber and are therefore very easy to change.

Design collections "Machined" and "2-Tone-Black"

Premiere: BMW R 18 Classic and the new BMW R 18!

Customizing parts and Roland Sands design collections “Machined” and “2-Tone-Black”. The BMW Motorrad equipment range offers a high degree of customization options so that the R 18 Classic and R 18 can be designed according to personal taste and preferences. The variety of different parts from the Original BMW Motorrad Accessories enables individual conversions that significantly change the character of the R 18 Classic and R 18. When the new R 18 Classic and R 18 are launched, there are two different design collections of milled aluminum parts created together with Roland Sands Design: "Machined" and "2-Tone-Black".

Co-branding with famous brands: Mustang seats and Vance & Hines exhaust systems “Made in USA”. For the accessories and customizing program for the new R 18, BMW Motorrad is cooperating with Roland Sands Design and a number of well-known suppliers, including the US manufacturer Mustang Seats, with which high-quality, handmade seats and benches are offered in different versions. No less creative is the customizing potential for the exhaust systems in cooperation with Vance & Hines. If we get more information, there is of course an update for this report.
