Emotional roadster look - the new BMW S 1000 R!

With our new S 1000 R, we have tried to preserve the strengths of the predecessor and to take into account the potential that we know from press and customer feedback in the new S 1000 R. The team also made perfect use of the advantages of the new architecture. ”Ralf Mölleken, Project Manager Complete Vehicle. The new BMW S 1000 R - the dynamic roadster based on the S 1000 RR in a new dimension. Emotional roadster optics combined with super sporty driving dynamics - this is what the new BMW S 1000 R stands for. In terms of the engine and chassis, derived directly from the super sports car S 1000 RR, the Dynamic Roadster offers its innovative technology. The close relationship to the "RR" can be seen from every angle. With its reduction to the essentials, the new S 1000 R offers previously unknown dynamics. With a torque-optimized 121 kW (165 PS) peak output with an unrivaled light 199 kg DIN curb weight as well as ABS Pro, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), all-round LED lighting and much more as standard, the new S 1000 R once again sets the standards in the dynamic roadster segment.

5 kg lighter drive - based on the S 1000 RR

Emotional roadster look - the new BMW S 1000 R!

Newly developed, 5 kg lighter drive based on the S 1000 RR with adapted gear ratios, optimized midrange power and engine drag torque control (MSR) as special equipment. The in-line four-cylinder is based on the power unit of the S 1000 RR and develops 121 kW (165 hp) at 11 rpm. The maximum torque is 000 Nm at 114 rpm. Thanks to a particularly linear torque curve, it was possible to make the speed range wider, fuller and more harmonious in terms of even better drivability. The 9th, 250th and 4th gears are now longer in order to reduce the noise and consumption level as well as the engine speed level, especially when driving on country roads. In addition to a smoother and self-energizing anti-hopping clutch, the new S 5 R has, for the first time, an engine drag torque control (MSR) as an optional extra. Electronically controlled, MSR prevents the rear wheel from slipping caused by abruptly releasing the accelerator or downshifting.

lighter chassis based on the S 1000 RR

Completely new, lighter chassis based on the S 1000 RR with Flex Frame, Full Floater Pro kinematics, beam swing arm and optimized ergonomics. Like the entire vehicle, the chassis was also subjected to a heavy diet. The frame and swingarm are based on the S 1000 RR and have become significantly lighter than its predecessor. At the same time, the motor in the so-called flex frame takes on a much stronger supporting function than before. The new frame offers further advantages due to its very narrow design. This significantly reduces the vehicle width in the area of the part that is relevant for good knee closure and thus offers an even more relaxed driving posture with even more freedom of movement. Ergonomic adjustments now allow an adjustable handlebar clamp. Two positions are available as standard: 0 mm / +10 mm forwards. In addition, 10 mm higher handlebar brackets are optionally available, which can also be rotated by 0 mm / +10 mm in the direction of travel.

The suspension arm was taken over from the S 1000 RR and the shock absorber with Full Floater Pro kinematics is now significantly further away from the pivot axis and the engine. In this way, undesired heating up by the waste heat from the engine is prevented and an even more stable temperature behavior and even more constant damping forces are guaranteed. In combination with the swing arm derived from racing, this results in more grip and gentler handling of the tire.

Three driving modes, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro as standard. Special equipment "Driving modes Pro" with driving mode "Dynamic Pro", Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), engine drag torque control (MSR), "Engine Brake" and "Power Wheelie".

The new S 1000 R is equipped as standard with Dynamic Traction Control DTC, lean angle-optimized ABS Pro and the three driving modes "Rain", "Road" and "Dynamic". The fully configurable “Dynamic Pro” mode with particularly extensive setting options is also available as part of the “Pro driving modes” option. With “Driving Modes Pro”, the new S 1000 R also has the “Engine Brake” function in conjunction with the engine drag torque control (MSR) and the “Power Wheelie” function. As part of the “Pro Driving Modes” option, the dynamic brake assistant DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) also supports the driver during emergency braking maneuvers.

Multifunctional instrument cluster with 6,5 inch TFT display for best readability and the greatest variety of information.

The instrument cluster of the new S 1000 R was also adopted from the S 1000 RR. In addition to an extended range of functions and information, special emphasis was placed on the best possible readability. For this reason, the display was designed to be large for optimal presentation - even under difficult lighting conditions. It offers customized screen displays for various purposes. The Pure Ride screen, for example, provides all the information necessary for normal operation on the road, while another core screen displays displays for lean angle, deceleration and traction control. A Bluetooth interface to the smartphone for convenient arrow navigation with an app is included as standard. The TFT is conveniently operated from the handlebars using the multi-controller. A third core screen with bar display and lap timer is available via the optional M package.

New LED headlights and powerful LED lighting units as standard. Headlight Pro with adaptive cornering light and iconic light guide with daytime running light function as an ex-works option.

The light units of the new S 1000 R are based on the latest LED technology. This includes the new, striking LED main headlights with optimized low and high beams. The indicators and rear lights are also based on LED technology. The rear indicators have been adopted from the S 1000 RR and have an integrated rear / brake light function. The front direction indicators are "hidden" on the fork. Adaptive headlights as part of Headlight Pro as an ex-works option offer even more safety when driving at night. Additional LED modules are added here. Thanks to the lean angle-dependent control, the driver benefits from better illumination of the road in curves and thus drives even more safely at night.

New, even more dynamic design in an attractive basic color and two exclusive style variants.

In its latest edition, too, the S 1000 R borrows from its super-sporty counterpart, the S 1000 RR, in terms of form, but with the shape of a dynamic roadster. The “tail up - nose down” principle gives the S 1000 R an even more aggressive and dynamic look with its new bodywork. The sporty, dynamic appearance of the new S 1000 R is also reflected in the color concept. In addition to the basic color Racing Red, the Style Sport and the M package with additional product content are available as special equipment.
