An extra air mattress probably won't add much to the overall load of an RV. However, many tend to pack a lot more before traveling – from groceries and clothing to bikes and sporting gear. The weight of the passengers must also be taken into account. It is therefore important not to exceed the vehicle's maximum permitted weight in order to avoid danger and possible penalties. You can remember this as follows: The maximum permissible weight specified in the vehicle documents minus the curb weight results in the theoretical payload. But the focus is on “theoretical”. Extras that were installed later are not included in the curb weight. So it's just a first indication of how much more can be transported. This is true even if a range of tare values is given and you are guided by the highest value.
Check the weight of your RV
A better approach: Drive the empty but full tank vehicle to a public vehicle scale to determine the actual curb weight. Then you should add exactly the determined load and plan a safety reserve. An alternative would be to drive the fully loaded vehicle onto the weighbridge. But the risk is that you can already exceed the permitted weight on the way to the scales and get caught in a vehicle check. In order to reduce weight, you can leave the water tank empty while driving and only buy groceries and provisions at your holiday destination. Replacing china dishes with plastic can also help reduce overall weight.
What to consider? | Declaration |
---|---|
total weight of the mobile home | Check your RV's gross vehicle weight rating to make sure it's not exceeded. |
weight of the payload | It's important to consider the weight of everything you're carrying, including people, luggage, gear, and water. |
distribution of weight | Evenly distributing weight can help improve the RV's handling and stability. |
Checking the tires | Make sure the tires can take the extra weight and are properly inflated. |
Towable weight | If you are using a trailer, make sure that the total weight of the trailer is not exceeded. |
Check the suspension | Check that the suspension is in good condition and can handle the extra weight. |
Checking the brakes | Additional weight can affect braking performance, so the braking system should be checked and serviced. |
Maintenance and repair | More weight can lead to additional wear. Regular maintenance and repairs are important. |
Vehicle documents | Make sure that your vehicle documents (driver's license, registration certificate, etc.) contain all the correct information regarding the maximum permissible weight. |
Laws and Regulations | Know and understand the legal requirements for driving an overloaded vehicle in the countries where you intend to travel. |
Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
